on line essay background and analysis by Scott Miller. from his book Sex, Drugs, Rock Roll, and Musicals. The year is 1959, a pivotal moment in papers, American cultural history, when rock and roll was giving birth to the Sexual Revolution and everything in America culture was about to be turned upside down. Record companies were releasing more than a hundred singles every week and the country was about to explode. Grease , generally considered a trivial little musical about The Fabulous Fifties, is really the story of America’s tumultuous crossing over from the 50s to the 60s, throwing over repression and tradition for freedom and adventure (and a generous helping of cultural chaos), a time when the mrs danvers styles and nursery papers culture of the disengaged and disenfranchised became overpowering symbols of social model, teenage power and autonomy. Originally a rowdy, dangerous, over-sexed, and insightful piece of nursery, alternative theatre, Grease was inspired by the rule-busting success of Hair and Let Us Legalize shows like it, rejecting the trappings of other Broadway musicals for a more authentic, more visceral, more radical theatre experience that revealed great cultural truths about America. An experience largely forgotten by most productions of the show today. Like Hair before it and papers The Rocky Horror Show which would come a year later, Grease is a show about vs buddhism compare and contrast, repression versus freedom in nursery papers, American sexuality, about the clumsy, tentative, but clearly emerging sexual freedom of the late 1950s, seen through the lens of the middle of the Sexual Revolution in the 1970s. It’s about the near carnal passion 1950s teenagers felt for their rock and roll, the mrs danvers first art form that actually changed human sexuality. (The phrase rock and nursery roll was originally African American urban slang for sexual intercourse, going as far back as the of Understanding Anatomy During 1920s, and it made its way onto many rhythm and nursery papers blues recordings before the 1950s.) As theatre, Grease finds its roots in the rawness, the rowdiness, the lack of polish that made Hair and other experimental pieces in the 1960s such cultural phenomena. The impact of Hair on Grease can even be seen in The Foundation Anatomy During Renaissance Period Essay, the two shows’ titles, both taking as their primary symbols the hairstyles of young Americans as a form of rebellion and cultural declaration of independence.
Just as the characters of nursery papers, Hair and Grease reject conformity and authority, so too do both Hair and Grease as theatre pieces. Like Hair , Grease is an anti-musical, closer to the experimental theatre pieces of New York’s off off Broadway movement in the 60s, and light years from and contrast, other musicals running on Broadway at the time, like No No Nanette (in a terrible revival), Sugar, The Rothschilds, Applause, or A Little Night Music . Goodbye to Sandra Dee. Also like Hair , Grease is about authenticity , the nursery watchword of social model, that first rock and roll generation. Teen sexuality has been an papers issue in America since the Essay Legalize Gay Marriage invention of the rumble seat, always moving forward like a freight train, forever going faster and papers farther; and Grease is a snapshot of America right before teen sexuality exploded, examining the early cracks in the armor of middle-class respectability and Human During repression, the fantasy American Dream that never was but that came beaming into Americans’ homes over the television airwaves. Movie star Sandra Dee becomes Grease ‘s overarching metaphor for the artificiality of adult American life, a symbol that needed piercing. Sandra Dee was a big star at papers this point, and just in the two years that Grease spans, she released The Restless Years (1958), The Reluctant Debutante (1958), A Stranger in My Arms (1959), Gidget (1959), Imitation of Life (1959), The Wild and the Innocent (1959), and A Summer Place (1959), jumping back and forth between empty-headed teen comedies and about Legalize Gay Marriage stark melodrama.
Today, it may be hard to understand what Sandra Dee represented, but she was the poster girl for the big studios’ attempts to nursery, make teen movies, a genre which was up until that point the exclusive territory of small, low-budget producers like the bio psycho social model ubiquitous Roger Corman ( The Little Shop of Horrors, Bucket of Blood , and others). But the studios’ teen flicks were inevitably artificial in the extreme, creating a freakish – and clueless – adult imitation of the teen world, a kind of nursery papers, cultural Frankenstein, that teens could see right through. To savvy teenagers, Sandra Dee was a teen sellout, and in a world where authenticity was the term effects of residential goal, there was nothing worse. She was a fake – in her life, in papers, her acting style, and in her onscreen emotions. Teen audiences didn’t want that; they wanted High School Hellcats and Teenage Doll . Vs Buddhism Compare And Contrast. But adults loved Sandra Dee; she reassured them that their teen was a good girl. And many American girls took Sandra Dee as a role model – but not the real Sandra Dee, the cheery public character Sandra Dee, confusing her onscreen persona with her real life. Millions of Americans in postwar America were trying to live an nursery papers American Dream that was pure fiction, particularly for the working class; and that fiction is symbolized by Sandra Dee, a fiction at the heart of compare and contrast, Sandy’s arc in Grease . But on papers, another level, the The Foundation of Understanding Anatomy During Renaissance Essay metaphor gets even deeper – and this demonstrates the nursery papers craftsmanship of this script – because Sandy’s relationship with Danny mirrors Sandra Dee’s difficult real life relationship with Bobby Darin. As Rizzo taunts Sandy with Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee, she doesn’t really know how dark that dark underbelly really is… Darphne Merkin wrote in The New York Times in 2005 at the time of mrs danvers, Sandra Dee’s death: …the darling, pink world, as she herself characterized it, that Sandra Dee was thought to papers, inhabit by her fans had always been a grotesque mockery, plagued not by an overripened case of virginity but by childhood incest. The girl with brimming brown eyes and a fizzy lilt to bio psycho social model, her voice was born Alexandria Zuck in nursery, Bayonne, New Jersey.
Her parents divorced when she was five; her father, a bus driver, disappeared from her life shortly thereafter, and her mother, Mary, married a much-older real-estate entrepreneur named Eugene Duvan within a few years. . . Worse yet, Dee's devoted but manipulative mother turned a conveniently blind eye to the defiled sexual appetites of her new husband. Duvan, who liked to what, is the purpose of poetry?, tease his wife that he married her just to get Sandy, started having sex with his beautiful stepdaughter when she was 8 and continued doing so almost until his death when she was 12. As a result, Sandra Dee later suffered from nursery, anorexia, depression, and alcoholism throughout her life. All this made her cynically manufactured faade of sweetness even darker and hinduism more complex. This was the conventional, repressed, hypocritical, manufactured life from which Sandy Dumbrowski must escape. The thing is, [her career] happened so fast, was over practically before it began, that we can almost be forgiven for papers, misconstruing her as a cultural simulacrum: a blip on the monitor, a media invention, an adorable incarnation of a feminine ideal of the reluctant or unwitting nymphet, rather than a flesh-and-blood creature with needs and wishes (not to mention raging demons) of her own. Grease looks at the fifties with twenty-twenty hindsight and it sees the effects schools darkness and deception of the papers decade’s role models and authority figures. Sandra Dee wasn’t happy in her real life because she was never allowed to The Foundation During Renaissance Essay, be herself – to be authentic – and Sandy Dumbrowski suffers the same problem. Sandra Dee represents not just strict morality and virginity in nursery papers, Grease , but the entire manufactured mainstream culture of hinduism vs buddhism compare, 1950s America, a culture the kids of Grease reject. Rizzo’s pretty great at nursery choosing metaphors… Still, for most kids, the fifties were a time when America caught its breath.
After decades of upheaval – World War I, Prohibition, the Depression, World War II, and the Korean War – suddenly times weren’t so hard and the world didn’t seem as dangerous. (Kids were told about the threat of a Cold War nuclear attack, but it didn’t mean much to them and bio psycho social model didn’t really affect their lives.) Before the 50s, if kids worked it was for the family’s survival. Nursery. During the hinduism vs buddhism compare and contrast 50s, if kids worked it was because they were saving up to buy a car or buy parts for the car they had. It was a happy, playful decade for many (white) Americans, even those in the working class, as family cars transformed adult culture and rock and roll transformed teen culture. And one of the points of Grease is that kids of the 50s could afford to nursery papers, worry only about their own trivial problems; there was no world war, no Hitler to fear anymore. Though Grease implies many complex things, it is actually about the ordinary, everyday lives of a group of teenagers. Their chief worries are whether or not they’ll have a date to the dance and can they get the of Understanding During Renaissance car. But the nursery fifties were only a brief window of respite before the dark, dangerous times would return, with Vietnam, race riots, the anti-war movement, Watergate, and compare recession. Today, some conservatives idealize the nursery papers 1950s as a time of moral clarity, patriotism, family stability, and traditional values, a time to During Renaissance Period, which America should return. But that 1950s never actually existed. What looks to them like moral clarity was actually well-masked racism, sexism, and economic oppression. The only nursery people who were safe and comfortable were middle class and social model upper class white men (the only nursery papers demographics that still idealize that time).
What they see as patriotism was more like nationalistic terrorism, demagoguery, witch hunts. What they see as family stability was really mind-numbing conformity and drug-addicted suburban housewives. What they label traditional values were nothing short of race, class, and gender warfare. And it all boiled down to two central bogeymen, inextricably linked in the minds of the long of residential mainstream: sex and rock and nursery papers roll. Vs Buddhism. The Twin Gods of Grease . As Grace Palladino asks in Teenagers: An American History , Did the world really work better when girls had no choice in life but to nursery papers, get married, blacks knew their servile place, and kids who lived outside the charmed circle of term effects of residential, upper-middle class life were invisible? The story of Grease is set during the 1958-59 school year, at exactly the papers same time that America was facing the preliminary rumblings of the Sexual Revolution that would arrive in the mid-1960s and what, according to milton, is the of poetry? blossom in the 70s, only to nursery papers, be ended by mrs danvers AIDS in the early 80s. And like The Rocky Horror Show did later, Grease shows us how America reacted to this tumultuous time though two of its main characters.
Danny Zuko (along with Rizzo and Kenickie) represents that segment of American teens already sexually active in the 1940s and 50s, who ultimately frees the nursery conforming Sandy to compare, express her sexuality without fear or shame, leading her into a new life and a new decade of sexual freedom – a theme also at nursery papers the heart, though far more cautiously, of the 1959 film A Summer Place , starring Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue. Sandy Dumbrowski (notice how ethnic all the character names are, to suggest that they are working class) is mainstream America, reluctant to throw off the sexual repression of the conforming 1950s for the sexual adventuring of the 1960s. That is the story of mrs danvers, Grease –and the story of papers, America – the way sex was changing and the part rock and roll and cars and drive-ins played in that transformation. In the movie, the central love story may be the mrs danvers point, but on stage the papers romance is just a device for Essay Legalize Gay Marriage, making a larger, more interesting point. Grease isn’t about Danny and Sandy (which is nursery papers why fifteen of the show’s twenty songs have nothing at all to bio psycho social, do with them); Grease is about how rock and roll changed sex in America.
And those who criticize Grease for its immoral ending don’t understand what this show is really about papers, – and they really haven’t paid attention to the lyric of All Choked Up. The Word Made Flesh. Grease first opened in Chicago, where its story is set, in Let Us Gay Marriage, 1971. To a large extent, the 1970s marked the end of the Rodgers and Hammerstein revolution. It was the decade that gave permanent berth to papers, both the concept musical and the rock musical, both explored during the sixties but now taking their rightful place in mainstream musical theatre. These were shows that rejected the sunny optimism of earlier decades and instead revealed the feelings of rage and social loss that pervaded America in this era of nursery papers, Vietnam and Watergate. Social. The concept musical had been germinating since Marc Blitzstein’s very political, very angry The Cradle Will Rock in 1937, but it wasn’t until Stephen Sondheim and Hal Prince’s Company in 1970 that the nursery papers concept musical was in long effects of residential schools, a position to change everything. The rock musical had been born with Expresso Bongo in papers, 1958 and became mainstream with Hair in 1968, but it became a fixture on Broadway during the seventies, partly because the definition of rock was so pliable, so inclusive by then.
A rock musical could be Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, Two Gentlemen of vs buddhism, Verona, The Rocky Horror Show , or Grease, none of which sounded anything like the others; and yet they all shared a disdain for nursery, authority, a taste for rebellion, and a sexual frankness to long, which only the language of papers, rock and roll could give full voice. The phenomenon that was Grease began its long life in the summer of 1971 at Chicago’s Kingston Mines Theatre, in which its authors Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey were acting ensemble members. The show opened February 5, 1971, in a basement theatre where an Legalize Gay Marriage audience of nursery, a hundred sat on the floor on Let Us Gay Marriage, newspaper. The set consisted of backdrops painted on brown paper. At that time the show had far less music, far less plot, and no central characters. Nursery. But it did have infectious songs like Greased Lightning, Beauty School Dropout, Those Magic Changes, and We Go Together, and a solo for Patty Simcox that was later cut, Yuck. New York producers Ken Waissman and Maxine Fox saw the long term of residential show and recognized its surprising honesty and the appeal of its rough edges. Two of the Chicago cast members, Dinah Manoff (Marty) and James Canning (Doody) would play those roles on Broadway. Manoff would continue her role in papers, the film.
Once the producers decided to bring Grease to term effects, New York, they set about finding a production staff. One agent tried to sell them on hiring the nursery bright young director-choreographer Michael Bennett, but they didn’t think he was right for Grease . Social Model. They were probably right. They asked Gerald Freedman to direct, since he had helmed the nursery papers original off Broadway production of what, according is the purpose, Hair , but Freedman turned them down without even reading the script. They finally settled on director Tom Moore and choreographer Patricia Birch who had created such interesting, real staging and nursery choreography for The Me Nobody Knows ¸ a show about homeless kids. Of Understanding Human Anatomy Renaissance Period Essay. The producers wanted everything about the show to papers, feel rough, unpolished, de-glamorized – honest and authentic, like Hair – a concept the subsequent film and revivals did not understand.
According to Adrienne Barbeau’s autobiography There Are Worse Things I Could Do , the producers hired Moore to direct because Tom's strength was getting performances that were so realistic the audience didn't believe they were watching actors. That's what Ken [Waissman] and long term effects of residential schools Maxine [Fox] wanted for Grease . What they didn't want was a cotton-candy musical. It’s easy to hear on the original 1972 Grease cast album the raw, pure, untrained sound of nursery, 1950s rock and roll. Bio Psycho. Grease knows that sound because its creators lived it, the sound of Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Bo Diddley. The earliest rock and roll was never about polish or precision; this was the punk rock of the fifties, purposefully rejecting mainstream necessities like playing in tune, singing on pitch, keeping the tempo, staying together. It was a wholesale rejection of the values of their parents and their parents’ culture, an aggressive fuck you to Pat Boone and the like. Three decades later, American kids in the Reagan Era (The Neo-50s) would rebel in much the nursery papers same way with the creation of punk rock. Just as the greasers sported leather jackets, engineer boots, crazy hairstyles, and other rebellious fashions, so did their descendants, the punks, have their rebellious fashion statements in tattoos, piercings, and occult symbols. What, According To Milton, Of Poetry?. And now, so does the nursery papers hip-hop community. Critic Michael Feingold wrote in The Foundation of Understanding Human Anatomy During Essay, his introduction to the 1972 published Grease script: The people of Grease are a special class of aliens, self-appointed cynics in a work-oriented, upwardly mobile world.
We know from the nursery papers prologue that history has played its dirty trick on bio psycho model, them before they even appear. They are not at the reunion; they will not be found among the prosperous Mrs. Papers. Honeywells and the go-getting vice presidents of Straight-Shooters, Unlimited. Nor, on the other hand, did they actively drop out; that was left to their younger siblings and cousins. The Foundation Human Anatomy Renaissance Period Essay. (Memory of papers, a line too explicit, and cut from the script early on: Course I like life. Whaddaya think I am, a beatnik?) They were the group who thought they had, or chose to what, according of poetry?, have, nowhere to go. They stayed in the monotonous work routine of the lower middle class, acquiring, if they were lucky, enough status to move to one of the more nondescript suburbs, and losing their strongest virtue – the group solidarity that had made them, in high school, a force to be reckoned with.
It is appropriate that the nursery papers finale of Grease celebrates that solidarity, with the saving of its heroine, and model the reclamation of nursery, its hero from the clutches of respectability – a good lusty razz at the sanctimonious endings of those Sal Mineo j.d. [juvenile delinquent] movies ( Somebody Up There Likes Me , remember?) wherein the tough punk is saved for hinduism vs buddhism and contrast, society at nursery the end. Everybody knew you didn’t go to those films to see that part. After only three and a half weeks of rehearsal (again, in an effort to keep it from looking too polished), Grease opened off Broadway at the Eden Theatre on Valentine’s Day 1972. The reviews were negative to mixed. Bio Psycho Social. One hapless television reviewer said, The worst thing I’ve ever seen opened tonight at the Eden Theatre. Nursery. It ran 128 performances anyway. And then the long of residential schools show moved uptown in nursery, June 1972 to the Broadhurst Theatre. In December 1979, Grease broke Broadway’s long-run record. It made several moves during its Broadway run and finally closed April 13, 1980, after a total run of 3,388 performances. It was nominated for seven Tony Awards but won none. The original production paid back its investors four thousand percent.
The show also ran for about Let Us, over two years in nursery, Mexico under the title Vaselina, becoming the longest-running musical there. The watered-down 1978 film version starring John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, and Stockard Channing became one of the most successful movie musicals of all time. After fifteen years of declining numbers, the teenage population in America began to grow again in the early 1990s – They’re Back, said one Business Week cover – and so a glitzy, brainless, neon-scorched revival of Grease opened on Broadway in May 1994, painfully misdirected and misunderstood by Tommy Tune’s protg, director-choreographer Jeff Calhoun (who would years later direct a brilliant revival of Big River for Deaf West Theatre). Completely ignoring (or just missing) Grease ’s agenda as social commentary, this terrible revival decked out its set in bright, neon colors, making it into a simple-minded cartoon, and according purpose of poetry? it added an actual 50s song, Since I Don’t Have You, a song completely without the irony of the rest of the score and therefore completely out of synch with the rest of the show. The revival’s logo was a picture of Danny from behind, his leather jacket bedazzled with rhinestones that spell Grease . Could they have misunderstood the Burger Palace Boys any more? But despite the lack of taste or honesty, it was apparently perfect for the theme park Broadway had become by that point and it ran 1,503 performances. It was not, however, Grease . Over its life, Grease gave starts to many now well-known actors, including John Travolta (who had begun as Doody in the first national tour), Richard Gere, Treat Williams, Patrick Swayze, Adrienne Barbeau, Barry Bostwick, Jeff Conaway, Greg Evigan, Marilu Henner, and nursery papers Judy Kaye, among others.
In 2003 the British television network Channel 4 held a poll to determine the greatest musicals of all time. Grease won the The Foundation of Understanding Anatomy Renaissance Essay top honor. In 2007, NBC created a reality show through which to papers, choose the two leads for a new Broadway revival helmed by Kathleen Marshall, though any hopes of authenticity from a new Broadway Grease were slight. But perhaps it’s time for vs buddhism compare, Grease in its original form to return at last, in this new Age of nursery, Ironic Detachment. In 2005, Norman Lebrecht wrote about the new postmodern musicals ( Urinetown, Bat Boy, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Spelling Bee ) in his online column: The music in each of these shows amplifies this element of separation, licensing us to stand apart from what, to milton, is the of poetry?, what we are seeing and enter a third dimension where each of us can individually decide whether to take the plot literally or sardonically, whether to nursery, take offense or simply collapse in giggles. This degree of Ironic Detachment is the very making of the vs buddhism postmodern hit musical. Ironic Detachment would be unattainable in a Tom Stoppard play because I.D. requires musical inflexion; it is nursery papers impossible in according is the purpose, opera and ballet, which are stiffened by tradition against self-mockery. Papers. Its application is of Understanding During Renaissance Period unique to the musical comedy, an ephemeral entertainment which has found new relevance through its philosophical engagement with 21st century concepts of irony and alienation. Still, Ironic Detachment isn’t entirely new in musical theatre – we’ve seen it before, periodically over papers the twentieth century, in The Threepenny Opera (1928), Of Thee I Sing (1931), The Cradle Will Rock (1937), Guys and Dolls (1950), The Fantasticks (1959) , How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961) , Promenade (1965), Cabaret (1966), Promises, Promises (1969), Company (1970), The Rocky Horror Show (1973), The Robber Bridegroom (1974), and yes, Grease.
Sock Hop Baby, Roll Up Your Crazy Jeans! Almost every American musical sets up the social same challenge for nursery, the protagonist – assimilate or be removed. Legalize. These central characters must make a choice to papers, either change in long term effects of residential, certain ways in nursery, order to join the existing community or they must be removed from bio psycho social model, that community either by leaving or by dying. In The Music Man , Harold Hill turns legit in order to join the nursery papers River City community. In Sweeney Todd, Jesus Christ Superstar, Bat Boy, and long effects schools Evita , the main characters will not (or cannot) change so they must be removed by papers death. In Brigadoon , Tommy decides he must reject his previous life and change everything in order to stay in Brigadoon and become part of the community. Long Term Of Residential. In Show Boat , Julie and papers Steve will not play by mainstream society’s rules, so they must be removed, and they leave the Cotton Blossom. In Man of La Mancha , Quixote/Quijana refuses to social model, live by conventional rules of behavior, so he must die. In Grease , Sandy ultimately assimilates into the greaser community, rejecting her parents’ world view. Many people are uncomfortable with the show’s ending because they miss the fact that Sandy doesn’t actually become a slut in the finale; she just learns how to nursery papers, dress like one, finally letting go of the tendency of too many Americans to stigmatize sexuality as dirty and shameful.
She gives up the desexualizing poodle skirt that hid away her female form and replaces it with clothing that reveals and celebrates – and takes ownership of – her body and of Understanding Human Anatomy Renaissance its adult curves. Papers. This is what, according to milton, purpose of poetry? not a descent into decadence for Sandy; it is a throwing open of the doors of her moral prison. The authors’ intentions are clear in a stage direction in papers, the final scene. After describing Sandy’s new hypersexual look – the tight pants, leather jacket, earrings, wild new hair – the script says, Yet she actually looks prettier and more alive than she ever has. Teenagers’ clothing was a major source of contention at the time. Grace Palladino writes in her fascinating history Teenagers : School authorities solved the immediate problem (teenage delinquency) with dress and behavior codes. Tight blue jeans, ducktail haircuts, and excessive makeup were prohibited in school.
Dress Right campaigns set appropriate high school styles that drew national attention in the late 1950s. Boys were required to mrs danvers, wear shirts and ties, standard trousers (or neatly pressed khakis), and polished shoes (or clean white bucks). Girls were required to wear dresses or shirts and forgo pincurls, dungarees, and slacks. Nursery. As an of Understanding Anatomy article in Newsweek explained the theory: Bejeaned girls behave better when they’re in ladylike dress. Sandy’s clothing in papers, All Choked Up is extraordinarily subversive. The end of Grease suggests that a lasting, healthy relationship is only possible when both partners are openly and completely themselves, without regard for other people’s opinions, social conventions, or personal insecurities – and also when neither of them are afraid of their sexuality. This was not the message of the conforming adult world; this was a uniquely teen perspective. Both Sandy and Danny have to learn to term, be themselves, to nursery papers, shake off the masks of cool and respectable. If there is any question about who the protagonist of the show is, Sandy is primary; she’s the one who has changed, who has learned something significant. The same may be true of Danny, but to according to milton, is the, a much lesser extent.
But the ending of Grease isn’t a moral and papers shouldn’t be read that way. It doesn’t declare what we should or shouldn't do; it's an objective and accurate description of America in 1959. Sandy is America in its progression from puritanical repression in the 50s to sexual freedom in the Sexual Revolution of the 60s. (And yet, as her lyric in All Choked Up tells us quite explicitly, she isn’t ready to bio psycho, give up her virginity quite yet.) In 1959 America was about to grow up sexually, into adolescence in the 60s ( Hair ), and into full sexual adulthood in the 70s ( Rocky Horror ). Too many people believe that the papers message of Grease is that to win the bio psycho social model man you love, you have to be a slut. But there's not a single line or lyric anywhere in the show to papers, suggest Sandy has changed anything but her looks. Like Eliza Dolittle in My Fair Lady , Sandy learns The Secret, that anyone can Fit In just by talking and looking the right way (and don’t we all do that to some extent?), and her overnight transformation proves that it’s all just play-acting – and that they all know it ! She has learned what Rizzo and the girls have known all along. Sandy has become one of them just by changing her clothes! She throws off the weight and triviality of 1950s conformity and allows herself the freedom of the bio psycho social model coming 1960s, a refusal to fear her own sexuality, to see sex as dirty, the freedom to be able to talk and papers laugh openly about sex. But behind all the what, to milton, is the of poetry? rest, there’s a simpler, more subversive message. Sandy isn’t just saved by how she dresses; she’s saved by papers singing rock and roll. It isn’t until she can achieve the authenticity and sexual frankness of about Legalize Gay Marriage, rock and roll, that she can be healed.
Grease doesn’t moralize; it just reports. Grease is set in 1958 and nursery 1959 for The Foundation During Renaissance Period Essay, a good reason – it’s not just about the changing of papers, decades but also the changing of eras . Sandy’s triumphant line late in mrs danvers, the show, Goodbye to Sandra Dee, puts away not only Sandy’s false good-girl persona, but also the 1950s as a whole, a world in nursery papers, which the model goody-goody Sandra Dee can be a role model, in nursery, which facades were cracking. We were moving on… The Fabulous Fractious Fifties. The Fabulous Fifties. The Decade Deluxe. The Ike Age. These were the good old days, the happy days, the source of long effects schools, many an American’s earliest, fondest memories and many of our postwar institutions. For the past two decades Americans had lived in the grip of poverty and war. Now they were ready for some giddy, goofy fun. The country was swept up in frivolous fads – baton twirling, hula hoops, paint-by-number art kits, Davy Crockett hats, 3-D movies.
Life seemed a wide-screen, stereophonic special effect. Culture popped – in shades of nursery papers, turquoise, pink, salmon, and, if one color wasn’t enough, delicious two-tones. Madison Avenue created an unlikely world of perfect appliances and perfect families, of highballs and hinduism compare and contrast hi-fis, Bermuda shorts and backyard barbecues. In the ads, the nursery papers wives are beautiful (mowing the lawn in peasant blouses and a hint of lingerie); the children above average (exuberantly joining in the Saturday morning car wash). Over the clink of ice cubes, Americans mingled and misbehaved. That’s how James Petersen’s book The Century of bio psycho social, Sex describes 1950s America and nursery the false, repressed world from which Sandy must escape.
There were three distinct cultures in America during the The Foundation Human Anatomy Renaissance Essay 1950s – mainstream middle-America, New York City (including the Beat writers), and papers teenagers – and they rarely intersected each other, so none of them spoke the term effects of residential schools others’ languages or shared their morality. Most of nursery papers, mainstream adult America lived a life of complete ignorance, happily watching safely artificial television sitcoms and carefully censored studio films, having little or no idea what was going on in teen America, in teen music, movies, magazines, social life, and most significantly, teen sexuality. After World War II, most adult women had been expected to leave behind the independence of their lives on the home front during the war and return to a life of near complete dependence again – no more job, no more money, no more sexual control or choice. Betty Friedan wrote of the times, It was fun at first, shopping in those new supermarkets. Social. And we bought barbecue grills and made dips out of sour cream and dried onion soup to serve with potato chips, while our husbands made the martinis as dry as in papers, the city and vs buddhism compare cooked hamburgers on nursery papers, the charcoal, and we sat in canvas chairs on our terrace and what, according to milton, of poetry? thought how beautiful our children looked, playing in the twilight, and how lucky we all were, and nursery papers that it would last forever. These were the real people behind the metaphor of the 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers. As The Century of Sex says, Conformity became a national passion, part of a return to sexual and Essay Let Us Legalize Gay Marriage political conservatism. The Battle Over Sex has always been waged between the Haves and the Have-Nots in America. Throughout history, there has been great sexual freedom and little shame among the Have-Nots, since they have nothing which can be imperiled. Nursery. But the The Foundation of Understanding Anatomy During Renaissance Haves are always terrified of any kind of papers, cultural change, especially sexual, because the fallout could always endanger their position as Haves. Sandy is a Have, Danny is a Have-Not.
The sparks are bound to fly. All in all, the 1950s was one of the hinduism vs buddhism and contrast most interesting decades of the twentieth century – so much wealth, so much repression, so many massive changes in the culture, perhaps most significantly the nursery invention of the term effects of residential suburbs, in nursery, which middle-class wives would be forever isolated and tranquilized. According To Milton, Is The Purpose. The characters in Grease were born around 1942, the last generation born before the Baby Boomers, and they went to high school from fall 1955 to summer 1959. The cultural influences on them during this period were some of the fiercest America had yet seen. In 1951, J.D. Salinger’s controversial Catcher in the Rye had been published and nursery papers became an instant, lasting hit among teenagers, with its profanity and mrs danvers frank discussions of teenage angst and sexuality. Then, just as these kids were hitting puberty, America was hit with The Wild One in 1953, starring Marlon Brando, the nursery movie that started the whole leather jacket greaser thing as well as the teen exploitation film genre. The central relationship in Grease between Danny and Sandy is a goofier imitation of the central relationship in The Wild One between Johnny and Kathie. Exactly like the teen market they were targeting, teen exploitation films were full of sex and model sin and booze and cars, but many of nursery papers, them also had a sanctimonious moral laid out explicitly, at the beginning or end of the film, often by a nameless authority figure behind a desk or podium, sometimes by a survivor of the tragedy.
These fake morals gave the raunchy stories the patina of respectability to placate parents and what, according purpose of poetry? would-be censors. But for the kids, these movies mirrored the real world, in nursery papers, which teenagers were discovering they had a certain kind of power, a kind of power that just might be able to challenge the power of their parents. And the teen rebel was born. In 1954, just a year before the term effects schools Grease kids would start high school, Elvis Presley burst upon the American scene with his first hit, forever changing notions of gender and sexuality, rebelling against the strong, silent type model of previous generations of men like John Wayne and Gary Cooper, in favor of a remarkably sexual, nakedly emotional new model of maleness embodied by nursery the likes of Marlon Brando and Let Us Gay Marriage James Dean. Nursery. John Waters documented this cultural shift in long term effects of residential schools, his film Cry-Baby , set just a few years before Grease. While the Grease kids – and the show’s authors – were in high school, the movies Rock Around the Clock and Rock, Rock, Rock were released in papers, 1956 (the same year the mayor of Jersey City, New Jersey, banned all rock and roll within the city limits), giving some teens their first chance to mrs danvers, actually see Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley and the Comets, The Platters, and many others performing their songs.
That same year the teen exploitation flick Hot Rod Girls was also released. In 1957, Roger Corman’s daring Teenage Doll (which still holds up pretty well) and nursery Eighteen and Anxious were released. Teenage Doll was about a girl gang out for The Foundation of Understanding Human Renaissance Essay, revenge after one of nursery papers, their members is mrs danvers murdered by a rival gang. The film ended with a giant rumble with girl and boy gangs fighting in an auto salvage yard. This was not their parents’ kind of movie.
That same year saw Michael Landon in I Was a Teenage Werewolf , a much more serious film than it sounds, about a damaged, misunderstood teen and about American teenagers’ feelings (reinforced by rock and roll) of us vs. them. Jack Kerouac’s groundbreaking, anti-authoritarian On the papers Road was published that year too, the inevitable follow-up to Catcher in the Rye . In 1958, two more teen movies were released that showed us the underbelly of American teenage life (real or imagined), High School Confidential and the girl-gang High School Hellcats . And Contrast. In 1959, T-Bird Gang was released, one of the great teen gang drive-in movies, as well as A Summer Place , one of the great make-out movies. The 1928 sexually charged novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover was finally released in America in 1959 and sold six million copies the first year. Just after these kids graduated, in 1960, The Wild Ride was released, starring Jack Nicholson as the kind of cocky, smartass rebel that the Burger Palace Boys in nursery papers, Grease wish they could be. But 1960 also brought us that moment toward which everything had been leading and from which everything would flow. Dick Clark saw some kids doing a sexually suggestive dance called The Twist in his studio, inspired by a year-old record. Clark called the Essay record label and asked for a new recording of The Twist.
It caught on like wildfire and convinced the adult population of America that the world was coming to an end. Papers. Sex was no longer subtle or implied. Sex had broken free of the bedroom and the 1960s were coming. These kids in Grease are on the cusp of that moment, just as they are on the cusp of adulthood. Michael Feingold wrote: Grease does not discourse about our presence in Saigon. Nor does it contain in-depth study of long of residential, such other 50s developments as the papers growth of mega-corporations and conglomerates, the suburban building boom that broke the backs of our cities, the separation of labor’s political power from the workers by union leaders and organization men.
Although set in and around an urban high school, it does not even discuss one of the decade’s dominant news stories, the massive expansion of the mrs danvers university system, and the directing of a whole generation of war babies toward the papers pursuit of college degrees. Grease is an escape, a musical designed to entertain, not to concern itself with serious political and social matters. But because it is truthful, because it spares neither the details nor the larger shapes of the vs buddhism narrow experience on which it focuses so tightly, Grease implies the topics I have raised, and many others. So I think it is a work of art, a firm image that projects, by means of what it does contain, everything it has chosen to leave out. And between the throbs of nursery, its ebullience, charm, and comedy, it conveys a feeling, about where we have been and how we got to where we are… During the Greasers’ senior year at Rydell High, in February 1959, another epoch changing event took place, the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper – the day the music died.
The 1950s were coming to a close, and a decade full of chaos and controversy was coming fast, with a whole new kind of rock and a whole new kind of bio psycho social, American sexuality. Grease is a prequel to Hair , every bit as well crafted, every bit as authentic, every bit as insightful, and nursery just as truth about an incredibly volatile, fascinating moment in American history. Rock and Roll Party Queen. In the book Fever: How Rock’n’Roll Transformed Gender in America , author Tim Riley writes, The boomers born after World War II, both men and women – the characters in hinduism compare and contrast, Grease were all born around 1942 – learned much of what they know about how to be young, how to seek and earn love, and how to struggle toward adulthood from the popular music they listened to. Papers. As it would be for decades to come, rock music was more of an authority figure than any adult could ever be.
Rock stars helped their young fans grow from social model, boys to men and girls to women, Riley writes, by exploring and celebrating the nature of that struggle – the nursery full range of sexual bewilderment, frustration, and longing. Grease chronicles exactly that phenomenon. The kids in Grease may well have seen their rock heroes in person, since DJs like Alan Freed (a likely inspiration for Vince Fontaine) frequently hosted live rock and roll concerts in bio psycho model, Cleveland, Chicago and elsewhere. Howard Miller, known as Uncle Moo Moo, was the number one morning DJ in nursery papers, Chicago from 1947-1968, on bio psycho, WIND, where the Grease kids would no doubt listen to him every morning before school. Nursery. In 1957, Miller produced the first live rock show in Chicago, featuring Tab Hunter, Charlie Gracie, Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, and the Everly Brothers. That same year Alan Freed got his own TV show, and it was such a success, the next month ABC picked up Dick Clark’s American Bandstand as well. In The Century of mrs danvers, Sex, Petersen writes, Previously, teenagers had shared their parents’ world – watching the same movies, listening to the same songs on nursery, the radio. Now they had their own teenage idols, their own films, music, fads, and fashions.
In retrospect we know that the well-behaved youngsters of yesteryear weren’t well-behaved because they were morally superior, but because they rarely had the opportunity to mis behave. In the about Gay Marriage 1950s – and even more so in nursery papers, the decades to come – those opportunities would be almost without limit. Adults were no longer sources of wisdom; adults were now outsiders. Teenagers had power and, more important, they had their own culture. Palladino writes in Teenagers : By the mid-1950s, however, Seventeen [magazine]’s respectable brand of adolescent culture had real competition – white, middle-class teenagers were not the compare only high school students with money to spend! Postwar prosperity had opened the nursery door to an entirely different teenage world, one that was populated by working-class and The Foundation of Understanding Anatomy Renaissance Period black teenagers who had never participated in high school social life before.
This demographic shift changed the nature – and nursery papers the appeal – of the teenage market. These two worlds are represented in mrs danvers, Grease by Sandy and Danny. Rock and papers roll was the first music ever created specifically for teenagers, and many adults literally predicted the apocalypse when they heard it. Now all American teens would lose their moral compass, they wailed, they would abandon all ambition and drive, and drown in a morass of hinduism compare and contrast, juvenile delinquency. (These were the same arguments against swing music in the 40s and drugs in the 60s, yet America kept plugging along.) Sure, there were occasionally riots at rock concerts, but there had also been a riot at a Guy Lombardo concert in nursery, 1944. In The Century of The Foundation Human Anatomy Renaissance, Sex , Petersen writes: The ethic, if that’s what it could be called, was simply: Don’t get in papers, trouble. The sexually active lived in fear of social model, pregnancy. The Kinsey Report had revealed that a large number of women were having premarital sex. Nursery Papers. A third Kinsey Institute report on Pregnancy, Birth and Abortion, which was published in 1958, would reveal that one out of every five women who had premarital sex became pregnant. Of those, one in long term effects of residential, five would be forced into marriage. The other four women had their pregnancies terminated by abortion.
Grease ’s subplot with Rizzo and her fear of pregnancy was a real part of life in the 50s for nursery, many unmarried, sexually active women. Unlike their parents, rock and roll took teenagers seriously . It took teenage sex and teenage love seriously. It put teenage emotions on a level with adult emotions, and it made teenagers feel like adults. And the best part for the kids was that parents hated rock and The Foundation Anatomy During Essay roll. Papers. (A 1957 article in Cosmopolitan asked Are You Afraid of Your Teenager?) Much of the long effects authenticity of nursery papers, Grease lies in its songs, a virtual catalog of of Understanding Human During Renaissance Essay, 1950s styles, structures, chord progressions, lyrical themes, distinctive bass lines, and unforgettable guitar licks, all as authentic as a 1954 Fender Stratocaster. By opening the show with the old-fashioned Alma Mater, followed by the explosion of the nursery papers hard rocking Alma Mater Parody, the kids of Grease literally rebel against their older selves (at the reunion), the past assaulting the present, reminding the adults in the audience that most of them have become what they once hated most: The Establishment. Let Us Legalize. The Alma Mater Parody, blasts off with one of the nursery papers most famous guitar licks of all time, created by to milton, purpose Chuck Berry for the hit Johnny B. Goode. Berry was one of the papers fathers of rock and roll, and so in this first scene, Grease instantly establishes its authenticity and its street cred as a rock and model roll document. The third song in the show Those Magic Changes comments on rock’s most important characteristic – aside from the papers beat – the treatment of teenage love and emotion as serious and legitimate. The lyric starts off as a classic 50s teen lament, but it quickly becomes self-referential, a postmodern 50s song. It’s a song about falling in love but also about chord changes, about the about Let Us Gay Marriage comfort and familiarity of nursery, those four simple chords that undergirded the majority of early rock and roll. And those four chords open Magic Changes—C, A minor, F, and G7 ,or I, vi, IV, V 7 . The singer here is a boy lamenting lost love but finding safety and happy memories in those same four chords that he hears in every song:
I have never heard that song before, But if I don’t hear it anymore, It’s still familiar to me, Sends a thrill right through me, ‘Cause those chords remind me of. The night that I first feel in love. To those magic changes. (And notice the internal rhyming that gives the mrs danvers song such momentum: before/anymore, to me/through me, of/love …) But Doody goes even further with the metaphor, now suggesting that it’s actually teenage emotion that creates, that incarnates rock and roll. He sings: My heart arranges. A melody that’s never the same, A melody that’s calling your name.
And begs you, please, come back to nursery, me . Rock gives him those four never-changing chords, and according to milton, his heart supplies the always-changing melody. This ever-present chord progression wasn’t simple because songwriters were untalented; it was simple to get out of the way of the emotions of the songs, just like the best of rhythm and nursery papers blues did. Unlike other musical forms – and this was something the adults just couldn’t get – chords weren’t the point here. The point is the emotion. Bio Psycho. This boy has been jilted, but he’s not in love with her anymore; now the papers object of bio psycho model, his love is rock and nursery papers roll itself. Rock and what, is the of poetry? roll understood teenagers.
It wanted what they wanted. The fact that Doody plays the guitar is very significant. The guitar was the symbol of rock and roll, and by extension, of nursery, teenage rebellion. An electric guitar was a weapon (just watch how rock Chuck Berry physically used his guitar). The guitar represented freedom, teen culture, emotion, romance, angst – and quite often, a penis! The guitar instilled confidence ! That also explains Johnny Casino and the Gamblers in Grease ’s prom scene – every boy wanted to be a rock and roll star.
1959 was a pivotal moment for rock and roll. Up to bio psycho social, that time, rock and roll addressed teen angst and misfired romance; but once the sixties arrived, rock songs would tackle war, injustice, sexual oppression, drugs, hypocrisy and authority, religion, and politics. Nursery. The songs in social, Grease straddle those two worlds, posing as the simpler songs of the fifties while subtextually delivering potent social commentary and satire. Feingold wrote in his Grease introduction: Grease is in possession of a truth, one of nursery papers, its strongest, about the media and how they worked on us. This is of course best seen in its superb, sharp-eared songs. The musical basis of 50s rock is fractured by comedy quite early in the enumeration of long effects of residential, Those Magic Changes. After that it is a matter of astonishment how many delicate subforms there were to nursery, the songs of the period, and mrs danvers how many different comic approaches Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey use to pin them down: Imitative homage (Rock ‘n Roll Party Queen), outright burlesque (Sandra Dee) ironic, look-the-other-way dirty joke (Mooning), character satire (Freddy, My Love), improbable-situation parody (Beauty School Dropout), and, best of nursery, all to my taste, the quiet revelation of fact as an antidote to the sentimentality of the originals.
Take It’s Raining on Prom Night – truthful, admittedly, but pretty squalid. Small. Petty. Not the deep sentimental tragedy you will find in compare, a prototypical serious song like Tell Tommy I Miss Him or Teen Angel. This song is nursery papers easier to laugh at than some of the others because it is what, according to milton, of poetry? more firmly distanced – not a report of something that actually happens to papers, our heroine, just a convenient index to vs buddhism, her momentary emotions. Jazz was made for nursery papers, the brain. Mrs Danvers. It was about nursery, detachment, bemusement, coolness . But rock and roll came straight for the heart and mrs danvers the groin. It was about primal feelings and desires.
It stripped its sound of precision, elegance, finesse, training (just like Punk). Real rock and roll was animal, outlaw. It was sweaty. It didn’t float like jazz. It exploded. It pounded. Rock and roll was banned in major cities across America. It terrified white adult America. Listening to rock became the ultimate rebellion for white kids especially. Nursery Papers. Their parents saw it as the biggest danger to what, purpose, all that’s decent since ragtime in the 1910s… or alcohol in the 1920s… or marijuana in papers, the 1930s… or swing in the 1940s… Rock and roll was responsible for an emotional revolution in America.
It began as race music (in other words, black music) and was initially declared unacceptable for young white ears. But it fast became the first truly racially integrated American art form, coming from equal parts black rhythm blues and white country music. (And the kids in Grease know RB; Rizzo even references Bull Moose Jackson’s 1948 RB song Sneaky Pete in term schools, the pajama party scene.) This was the first time in nursery papers, America that blacks and whites shared in the same culture, both consuming and creating it. And once Elvis appeared, rock and mrs danvers roll finally became (marginally) acceptable for nursery, white kids. For the first time in American history, white (young) people were being open and honest – even inappropriate – about their emotions. This was the most nakedly emotional music most white Americans had ever heard. And it changed everything. Soon after, in the 1960s, rock and roll would morph into Pop and Top 40, and it would no longer be the exclusive domain of the young. The adult world could finally got a grip on it. Elvis had been sent overseas. Chuck Berry was sent to prison for sexual misconduct. Congress held payola hearings to ruin DJs like Alan Freed, who broadcast his last live radio show in November 1957.
Now, rock and roll would become commercialized and forget its roots. This would continue to term effects of residential schools, happen to rock every decade or so. But Grease is about the papers beginning, when rock and roll was still pure, still naked, still dangerous, and America was still terrified of purpose, it. The Stacks of Wax. The score of Grease is remarkable in its craft and nursery authenticity, even referencing actual songs of the period. Hinduism Vs Buddhism And Contrast. Many of the actual period songs that influenced the Grease score were not chart toppers, because the Grease kids didn’t always listen to the most popular music; they were more musically and culturally adventurous than that. They listened to nursery, songs you could only hear late night on Alan Freed’s radio show, race songs, dirty songs, songs that scared adults.
But it’s important to note that the songs of what, purpose, Grease differ from real rock and roll songs in one significant way. Papers. The lyrics to real 50s rock and bio psycho roll songs were the nursery papers least important element of the what, to milton, purpose of poetry? song, often just dummy lyrics used as a vehicle for the artists’ personal vocal stylings, or for nursery, sophisticated harmonies or melodic ornaments. As in rhythm and hinduism vs buddhism compare and contrast blues, one of rock and roll’s parents, a song didn’t have to papers, convey information, just style and emotion, most of which was delivered through the abstract language of music. But theatre songs have to convey a lot of information or the show won’t work (which is why it was such a mistake to put a real 50s song into the 1994 revival). Because sung lyrics take more time than spoken dialogue, musicals have to do a lot of storytelling in fewer words than a play. So in Grease , Summer Nights lays out the what, purpose of poetry? central backstory, as well as characterizing most of the two gangs through their pointed questions. Magic Changes and Rock and Roll Party Queen lay out and nursery explore the mrs danvers show’s central themes. Papers. Most of the girls’ songs provide psychological character details – Marty and Rizzo’s cynical view of love in Freddy My Love and Worse Things; the friction between Rizzo and Sandy in what, to milton, is the purpose, Sandra Dee – but we also find commentary on 50s sexuality in Greased Lightning, Mooning, Drive-In Movie, and of course Worse Things. Every lyric contributes to the agenda of this deceptively sophisticated concept musical.
Grease opens with an authentically bland and properly pious Alma Mater, the sound of the adult world, of nursery papers, authority, complete with archaic language (like foretell, hovel, and thou shalt ) which then is ripped apart, deconstructed, unexpectedly exploding into (a close facsimile of) that famous Chuck Berry electric guitar riff, invoking Johnny B. Goode, as well as that audacious rejection of adult culture, Roll Over Beethoven. Like Berry’s School Day (Ring, Ring Goes the Bell), this parody Alma Mater is an according purpose of poetry? assault, a declaration of culture war, a defiant fuck you to the adult world, as they literally steal away the nursery adult’s anthem, give it a driving beat, and twist it to suit their own purposes. Renaissance Essay. And so Grease is papers off and effects schools running. This will not be a nice show, a tame show, a traditional show, the music tells us. This will be aggressive, even obnoxious. This will be rock and roll theatre. We move into the second scene and Summer Nights, the introduction of two of the nursery leads and their central plotline, inspired by real rock songs like Huey Piano Smith’s Don’t You Just Know It?, a song released in 1958 as these kids were starting their senior year. Summer Nights introduces the ten main characters, allowing each of mrs danvers, them to ask questions that reveal their characters. Marty wants to know if this guy has a car, while Frenchy only wants to know if Sandy’s in nursery papers, love. Human Anatomy During Renaissance. Kenickie wants to know if the sex was rough, while Sonny only nursery wants to know if the girl could fix him up with a friend.
We see here and in Essay about Let Us, the scene leading up to the song who each of the ten leads are – Kenickie and Rizzo, both damaged, beaten down, angry young adults; Roger, the clown; Jan, the cynic; Doody and Frenchy, the innocents; Sonny, the dangerous one; and Marty, the Material Girl. And the song also establishes the central conflict of Grease and of the 1950s, that Danny is comfortable with sexuality while Sandy is lost – trapped? – in nursery, the fantasy of perfect love, thanks to the likes of Sandra Dee, her handlers, and the movie studios (which were losing all their pervious power, due in part to what, to milton, is the, the burgeoning teen market). Some sources report that Rizzo’s dismissal of Sandy’s tale, Cause he sounds like a drag, was originally written, Cause he sounds like a fag . It’s certainly plausible, since Sandy describes a boy who barely touches her all summer, and in Rizzo’s world, that might well mean the boy is gay (or at least it would be a solid, cynical put-down of papers, Sandy’s romantic story). After the song, Rizzo suggests Sandy’s summer lover may be a fairy. Now that the characters are established and the plot is underway, Grease takes a moment with Those Magic Changes to explore the what, purpose show’s central themes, to underline the importance and centrality of music in this story and papers also in the show’s social commentary. Closely based on Paul Anka’s Diana and its distinctive bass line (you can actually sing Magic Changes to Diana), it also includes those distinctive falsettos vocal ornaments that pay homage to mrs danvers, songs like The Diamonds’ comic doo-wop hit, Lil Darlin’. Doody starts off solo, then the girls join in, then the boys join in, then two of the boys take off on those falsetto riffs, giving the whole song the papers tang of improvisation, as if these kids are just fooling around between classes. This is part of Essay Legalize Gay Marriage, what gives Grease such a unique feel, unlike almost any other musical. This is nursery papers a song that connects love – but also sex in the form of the magic changes of puberty – to rock and roll. This wasn’t just music to this generation; it was life , it was love, it was sex.
This was their music. They charted their lives to Human Anatomy Renaissance Period Essay, the songs on the radio, the song they fell in love to, the song they first had sex to. And as Magic Changes reminds us, every song is every other song, since so many of them used those exact same chord changes, a chord progression seemingly invented just for nursery papers, them (though really coming from bio psycho social model, rhythm and blues). All of papers, rock and roll is those magic changes that Doody dreams of returning to him every night. The idea that all you need is a guitar to be a rock and what, to milton, is the purpose roll star (perhaps in tribute to Bobby Bare’s satirical 1958 Elvis song, All-American Boy) was a deeply ingrained part of papers, teen culture. The next song, Freddy My Love is the show’s female doo-wop number, with a lead melody and to milton, purpose of poetry? rich harmonic back-up, closely based on Eddie My Love by The Tea Queens, while also slyly parodying The Shirelles’ I Met Him on a Sunday and Ronnie Spector’s Be My Baby, reinforcing old female stereotypes while also undermining and nursery revising them.
The driving triplet accompaniment here was a common beat in early rock and of Understanding Human Period roll, invented by Fats Domino for papers, Every Night About This Time. Mrs Danvers. They’re living in the 1950s, but these are women of the 60s. The idea of the papers other girls becoming back up singers for mrs danvers, Marty shows us how much they love the girl doo-wop groups, an entirely new phenomenon at that moment that would become huge in the 60s. The Ronettes were the first slutty girl group to make it big singing rock and nursery roll. They were what the girls wanted to bio psycho social, be (to get the nursery papers guys) and what the guys dreamed about getting. Freddy, My Love is a song about early feminism, about women being sexual and aggressive. Mrs Danvers. But it’s also about the materialism of the 1950s, a mindset in which money is better than sex, and gifts are the only true expression of love. And the idea of Marty singing to a guy stationed in Korea references the fact that Elvis was still in the Army overseas at this point, a sad fact for many teenagers. Greased Lightning combines two of the three major cultural forces of the nursery papers 50s, cars and Essay about Let Us Legalize Gay Marriage rock and roll.
Possibly inspired by The Cadillacs’ cocky Speedo, or Chuck Berry’s You Can’t Catch Me, this is a companion piece to Freddy My Love. Nursery. This is the guys’ perspective in the language of doo-wop: it’s all about sex, cars, and sex in cars. Long Of Residential. An article on Answers.com describes the provocative, lusty Chuck Berry, duckwalking through You Can't Catch Me, in the 1956 film Rock, Rock, Rock : …his guitar as phallic looking a stage prop as anything seen on the screen this side of the bananas in a Carmen Miranda production number. Had a Black man ever before been permitted such a degree of sexual expression (and you can see the delightful, proud smugness on Berry's face, knowing what audience the nursery movie was aimed at) in to milton, of poetry?, a movie intended for white audiences? This is the unfettered sexuality that terrifies the adult world, and nursery it does the Anatomy Essay same to Sandy. Greased Lightning is about America’s love affair with cars and teenagers’ love of speed . According to Rolling Stones ’ excellent history Rock of Ages , American automakers were asserting their products’ virtues of speed and power, turning the 1957 models into rocketship fantasies with nose cones, chrome grills, and razor sharp fins. Nursery Papers. This song is Essay Let Us not just a catalog of nursery, car accessories, but instead a real insight into the dreams of these guys.
After all, this is not a real car Kenickie’s singing about, but an unreachable fantasy car (which is why it may be better if we don’t actually see it onstage), the ultimate, luxury, high-performance, drag racing car, with high-priced accessories for speed and performance (lifters, fins, fuel injection), and also for automotive sex appeal (palomino dashboard, purple frenched tail lights, twin tail pipes). And it’s clear from the details that this will be a car intended for drag racing, the gladiator sport of 1950s teenagers, an extreme and Let Us Legalize Gay Marriage dangerous sport pitting one man against one man , in what was sometimes a battle to nursery papers, actual death. (Kenickie acknowledges this danger, and even knows how to diminish it with a fuel-injection cut-off, which stops the Essay about Let Us Legalize flow of gasoline in the event of a crash, in order to lower the nursery danger of an explosion.) Drag racing was illegal, sometimes deadly… and really sexy ! Skill and success in drag racing could always get a guy laid, as Kenickie well knows (or at least imagines): You know that ain’t no shit; I’ll be gettin’ lots of tit in hinduism, Greased Lightning. . . You know that I ain’t braggin’; she’s a real pussy wagon… But the song also tells us that Kenickie doesn’t really know much about drag racing or about customizing cars. Nursery Papers. A true drag racing enthusiast knows that the accessories Kenickie dreams of to milton, is the purpose, don’t all make sense together. For example, the four-barrel quads refers to nursery papers, a carburetor, but a car with fuel injection (as in his fuel injection cut-off) doesn’t have a carburetor – those two things would not be on the same car. Long Effects Of Residential. And no one would chrome-plate connecting rods; chrome-plating was just for show and nobody can see connecting rods on a car. And though palomino leather was popular for car interiors, no one would put palomino leather on a dashboard.
Finally, a kid in 1959 would either make his car look good or go fast; no kid had the money to do both (although you could argue that this is just a fantasy). In fact, a drag car that looked too good was the sure sign of a driver who wasn’t really serious about racing. It’s safe to assume that Kenickie probably knows very little about cars or drag racing, which gives this lyric far more complexity, humor, and character detail than it seems. The song Mooning may have been inspired by The Mello-Kings’ Tonight, Tonight or The Skyliners’ Since I Don’t Have You, and though the other songs in Grease proclaim a new worldview of sex and love, this one also trashes the old worldview, reducing the papers tepid moon-spoon-June romance of the 30s and long term effects of residential schools 40s to silly anachronism. It contrasts love today (1959) with love yesterday (their parents’), the physical versus the romantic, the play between the old definition of mooning as an over-sentimentalizing of young love, and the new definition of mooning as the act of baring one’s ass. Nursery Papers. Like Summer Nights, this is a song about the difference between chaste love and carnal love, the love Sandra Dee falls into mrs danvers, versus the nursery papers more real, more carnal love of naked, sweaty bodies. But this song goes further, into wickedly funny social satire; Summer Nights is about two kids, but Mooning is long schools about the whole generation. This song is also a great example of the craftsmanship of the songs in this show. Nursery Papers. Far from being merely tribute or parody, they are well written theatre songs. The lyric for Mooning contains some smart, sly, internal rhymes: Lyin’ by myself in bed, I.
Cry an’ give myself the red eye… They rhyme lyin’ with cry an’ ; and also bed, I with red eye , with the repetition of hinduism compare, myself in the middle for structure. And in nursery, the couplet’s payoff, they also sneak in another rude ass joke, playing with two meanings of red eye , referring to tear-reddened eyes but also that phrase’s 1950s slang definition, meaning the anus. As a companion piece to Mooning, Rizzo makes the comparison more personal with Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee, an what, according to milton, purpose of poetry? assault on Sandy’s false role models, a shot across the bow, making certain that Sandy knows that Rizzo knows that it’s all bullshit. Nursery Papers. The music is a classic, brilliantly imitative 1950s novelty song, with a meter and an introduction lovingly ripped off from mrs danvers, David Seville’s The Chipmunk Song, the surprise hit of the 1958 Christmas season. But the papers laughs get even darker when you realize that every male movie star mentioned in the lyric was a closeted gay man, forced to live a lie by his studio. What, According Is The. This is a song about sexual repression, false lives, and nursery papers false role models, and it’s proof that Rizzo knows more than we thought, that she has genuine insight into the world around her. And this peek into her mind allows her to carry the long of residential schools weighty There Are Worse Things I Could Do later in Act II. The act ends with We Go Together, an papers archetypal Happy Teenager song, very closely modeled on The Kodaks’ Oh Gee, Oh Gosh and Lewis Lyman’s I’m So Happy, maybe with a little dash of Little Richard’s Tutti Fruitti. (You can actually sing We Go Together to both I’m So Happy and Oh Gee, Oh Gosh.) This is a song celebrating the nonsense syllables of mrs danvers, early rock and roll, songs like Gee (The Crows), Bip Bam (The Drifters), Oop Shoop, (The Queens), Sh-Boom and Zippity Zum (both by nursery The Chords).
Little Richard’s famous phrase that We Go Together celebrates actually started off as Awop-bop-a-loo-mop, a good goddamn!, followed by Tutti Fruiti, good booty … It was later cleaned up. But this lyric succeeds as more than just send-up; it is bio psycho model also an articulation and celebration of this created family that nurtures and protects these kids, an artificial and nursery papers also very real family that has through necessity replaced their dysfunctional, probably abusive birth families. It is this family at the heart of the show’s surface plot which must survive the difficulties and bio psycho social model obstacles of teenage life, and also which must be sustained even as its leader attempts to create a relationship outside the nursery family for the first time. This lyric tells us – and these kids are telling each other – that these Ties That Bind are indeed strong enough to withstand the current conflicts, and the song’s reprise at the end of the show reminds us of the bio psycho importance of that strength for nursery papers, these kids. Shakin’ at the High School Hop. Act II picks up where Act I left off, with Shakin’ at the High School Hop, a loving tribute to Little Richard’s Ready Teddy, as well as many other legendary songs, like Shake, Rattle, and Roll (Big Joe Turner, then Elvis, and mrs danvers others), Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On (Jerry Lee Lewis), High School Confidential (Jerry Lee Lewis), and At the Hop (Danny and the Juniors).
The song’s introductory chords come from Bobby Freeman’s Do You Wanna Dance? In fact, High School Confidential actually contains the lyric, Shakin’ at nursery papers the high school hop… There’s also be a touch of mrs danvers, Bobby Darin’s Splish Splash, a song which references other early rock and roll songs, just as High School Hop catalogues the nursery papers dances of the Essay about Let Us time, including The Chicken, The Stroll, The Shimmy, The Cha-Cha, The Walk, The Hully-Gully, The Hand Jive, The Stomp, The Calypso, The Slop, and nursery The Bop. It also names several songs of the period, including Alley Oop and Mr. Lee, among others. It’s Raining on Prom Night is a Connie Francis number, combining attributes from several of her weeper songs, including Frankie (with a spoken section), Valentino, Carolina Moon, and Happy Days and Lonely Nights, among others. The Latin beat recalls her fondness for recording Italian language ballads like the hit Mama, and Anatomy Renaissance Period Essay Frankie even contains the idea of hiding tears, that later shows up in Worse Things I Could Do. Nursery Papers. It also has echoes of The Diamonds’ Little Darlin’, with its Latin beat and one spoken verse. According to some sources, this was the first Grease song Jacobs and Casey wrote, even before they had conceived the show, satirically putting the trivial and to milton, purpose mundane at the center of a big, emotional lament.
Far more than any other song in nursery papers, the score, this is parody more than tribute or invocation. The Prom Scene is the centerpiece of Act II and, not surprisingly, almost the entire scene is accompanied by dance music. This is a scene that’s entirely about the rock and roll. And the centerpiece of the scene is Born to Hand Jive, with its now universally famous choreography. The Hand Jive was invented for the Johnny Otis song, Willie and the Hand Jive, which hit the charts in 1958 and stayed in the Top Ten for sixteen weeks. This Hand Jive also takes inspiration (and its bass line) from Bo Diddley’s self-titled song, Bo Diddley, with its famous beat (the hambone) that would accompany so many of of Understanding During Renaissance Essay, Diddley’s songs. The beat is relentless, dangerous, wild abandon, the beat of nursery papers, sex. Once again, rock and roll is sex. Johnny Casino and the Gamblers are an example of the thousands of garage bands that appeared in the 50s.
The lyric of bio psycho social, Hand Jive clearly tells us that anyone can be a rock star if they’ve got the Beat in them, and the fact that everyone knows how to Hand Jive means everyone has the Beat. This was the beginning of the papers democratization of pop music that would continue into the 60s. Grace Palladino writes, If unremarkable kids like Dion Di Mucci and his group, the Belmonts, who hailed from the Bronx, could make it on American Bandstand , [teenagers] reasoned, then anyone with talent and determination had the compare same chance to nursery, succeed. Beauty School Dropout, Frenchy’s wacky nightmare of the bio psycho social model misogynist mainstream real world, was inspired (musically) by songs like The Penguins’ classic Earth Angel. But this scene also references the papers 1957 film Tammy and the Bachelor with Debbie Reynolds. Just before Beauty School Dropout starts, Frenchy wishes for a guardian angel like in that Debbie Reynolds movie. In the film, Aunt Renie (Mildred Natwick) plays the effects schools role of Tammy's (metaphorical) fairy godmother, who transforms her into a captivating Southern belle, looking just like the papers portrait of an mrs danvers ancestor of this elite Southern family. She even gives Tammy the ancestor’s dress to nursery papers, wear, so she can win the mrs danvers heart of her love. This is the fantasy Frenchy wants. And of course, it’s what will eventually happen to Sandy, being taken under the wing of other women, given new clothes, and taught new manners, though all in a hard-core, rock-and-roll kinda way… And it’s also a smart parody of those psychological dream sequences in old-fashioned musical dramas like Oklahoma!, West Side Story, Lady in the Dark, and others, in papers, which the leading lady works through her dilemma in the form of a dream. The joke here is that Frenchy doesn’t get the answer she wants from her dream, because Grease isn’t an old-fashioned musical.
Danny’s big character song (sadly replaced in the film), Alone at a Drive-In Movie, is a delicious tribute to and parody of the teen laments of early rock and roll, including The Penguins’ Earth Angel (you can sing Drive-In Movie to the original recording of Earth Angel), The Platters’ The Great Pretender, The Flamingos’ Would I Be Cryin’?, and Johnny Ray’s Cry. It is a classic male doo-wop song, with its independent bass line and falsetto tenor floating up above the lead melody. The song works both as a musical theatre I Want character song, and also as an authentic 50s rock lament. This moment couldn’t be clearer: Sandy may want acceptance, (self-)love, self-knowledge, but Danny just wants sex . These two worlds have to find an long schools accommodation, and they will in the show’s finale. (The replacement song in the film, Sandy, isn’t a bad song, but it doesn’t achieve half of what Alone at a Drive-In Move does, textually, thematically, or musically.) But this song also works on papers, a second level, as a cultural commentary on the power of drive-in movies in teen culture in the 50s. Cars had been changing sex since the 1920s, but by to milton, purpose the 50s, more teenagers had access to cars than ever before, giving them the privacy they craved on nursery, a regular basis. Drive-in movies had been created as family entertainment, and between 1943 and long term of residential 1953, more than 2,900 drive-in theatres opened in papers, America, the about total reaching nearly 5,000 by 1958. Nursery Papers. And once television stole the family audience, drive-in owners targeted their marketing exclusively at teens, while small, low-budget studios started cranking out vs buddhism and contrast material specifically for this new niche market, creating teen exploitation films that drastically changed and radicalized teenagers’ perception of papers, themselves and each other. Drive-ins became a place to cruise for girls, hang with the wrong crowd, get drunk and get laid (awkwardly, in the back seat).
These films opened teenaged eyes to sex, violence, and other various vices like never before, inadvertently creating a new, more sophisticated, more cynical teen market. The fake movie dialogue in The Foundation of Understanding Human, the scene leading up to Alone at the Drive-In Movie lampoons the two most prevalent genres of drive-in films: horror movies (a comic mix of nursery, I Was a Teenage Werewolf and social those paranoid 1950s science run amok flicks, like 1954’s Them! ) and drag racing movies. Strangely enough, television had also come close to nursery papers, killing radio, in ratings and advertising revenue, until radio did what the drive-ins did by targeting teenagers. Rock and Roll Party Queen is mrs danvers another song (like Magic Changes and Hand Jive) that reminds us that Grease isn’t primarily about nursery papers, Danny and Sandy; it’s about rock and roll and what, is the purpose how it impacted American sex. This is a tribute to nursery papers, the Everly Brothers and their perfect-thirds harmonies, modeled on Wake Up, Little Susie (a song about having sex at Essay Gay Marriage the drive-in) and other Everly Brothers hits, as well as songs like the papers Dell-Vikings’ Come Go With Me.
The lyric says more than it seems, describing a party girl that all the kids know (in the Biblical sense?), that they talk about, who stays out late with boys, and who will soon be seventeen (the age of Let Us, sexual consent, which of course means she’s currently under the age of consent…). The Party Queen is the fully sexual girl that Rizzo is and Sandy may become. In context, the song both comments on Rizzo’s fears of pregnancy and foreshadows Sandy’s realization that she’s too repressed sexually. This scene also shows us another aspect of 50s teen culture, the Basement Party. Grace Palladino writes in Teenagers , If their parents could afford it, they followed the experts’ advice to nursery, fix up party rooms to of residential, keep young teenagers safe at home . . Nursery. . Of Understanding Human During. complete with a television set, soft drink bar, and plenty of room for papers, dancing. Jan hosts this party and Marty hosts the pajama party in Act I – their parents clearly know about this philosophy.
But the scene is important dramatically because it’s the social model first time we see both Rizzo and Kenickie grapple with real, serious emotions, revealing a vulnerability that is uncomfortable for both of them. Rizzo’s big Eleven O’Clock Number (the big character-revealing song just before the finale) is the now classic There Are Worse Things I Could Do, possibly inspired by The Tune Weavers’ Happy, Happy Birthday, Baby, a 50s song with a similar broken heart theme and beat. Rizzo is (spiritually if not actually) one of the Beats (commonly – and derisively – called Beatniks by the mainstream to suggest that they were Communists), a group most famously represented by Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, who in the 1950s rejected mainstream values, morality, and art, trying to break through the nursery faade of The Foundation of Understanding Human Renaissance Period, polite society to a more honest, more authentic way of nursery papers, living. Worse Things contains the entirety of 1950s youth (and Beat) morality in its lyric. Like everything else in effects, Grease , Rizzo represents that transition from the 50s to the 60s. She’d like us to think she’s as authentic as they come, but she hides Kenickie’s paternity from nursery papers, him and she hides her hurt from her friends.
It’s only when Sandy calls Rizzo on her mask that Rizzo sings There Are Worse Things I Could Do, beginning a two-song arc of revelation for Sandy. Structurally, this song links these two women. Social Model. In each of the nursery papers three verses, Rizzo attacks Sandy for her perceived sins – being a tease (leading Danny on but not delivering), being self-pitying (most notably in Raining on Prom Night), and being judgmental (in the scene leading up to the song). As often happens in real life, the Let Us Gay Marriage sins Rizzo sees in Sandy are also Rizzo’s sins as well. Worse Things segues directly to its companion piece, Sandy's parallel self-evaluation, the reprise of Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee, in which Sandy finally sees and accepts the truth in Rizzo’s metaphor, finally recognizing that she must reject artificial values imposed by othersand find her own way. But Sandy only comes to this realization because Worse Things opened her up to the idea of authenticity as a fundamental value; now she can act on that newfound wisdom in her reprise (just like in all the papers ancient hero myths). Tim Riley argues in Fever that early rock and roll delievered a powerful message to its listeners: The challenge of building an what, to milton, is the purpose original identity, rather than accepting a received identity predicated on the values of papers, their parents, became a necessary life passage. Like all the best theatre songs, Sandy makes a decision in the Sandra Dee reprise, and the plot takes a turn toward its final destination. Sandy must decide who she is herself and what she values; she must embrace all of who she is, including her sexuality. Bio Psycho Social Model. She now realizes that only when she is true to herself can she be happy with Danny, and papers this final revelation will lead us to the show’s rowdy, playful finale All Choked Up (sadly replaced in the film by long of residential schools the less carnal disco number You're the One That I Want).
And again, we can see Jacobs and Casey’s lyric writing craft here, as they effortlessly spin out nursery multiple internal rhymes without ever disrupting a line or thought: There has to be. Something more than what they see. Wholesome and pure, Also scared and unsure, A poor man’s Sandra Dee. Poor even rhymes (unnoticed) with pure and unsure . The bridge is loaded with long e and long i sounds, in an ABCABC rhyme scheme, with a close interior rhyme at the end, in has and last : When they criticize.
And make fun of me, Can’t they see the tears in my smile? Don’t they realize. There’s just one of me, And it has to of residential, last me a while?
And the rhyming accelerates in the last verse, giving the song real momentum as Sandy marches toward triumph: Must start anew. Don’t you know what you. Hold your head high, Take a deep breath and nursery papers sigh, Here again, some usually unnoticed treasure, in the powerful alliteration of Hold your head high , as each successive line climbs musically higher and higher to the climax.
But this song isn’t just about The Foundation of Understanding Human Anatomy Renaissance, Sandy saying goodbye to her false idols; it’s also about papers, America saying goodbye to the false idols of the according 1950s, saying goodbye to the turning of its collective blind eye away from the hidden horrors of the decade: rampant racism, sexism, homophobia, teen pregnancy and abortion, prescription drug abuse in the suburbs, and so much more. Sandy has to face herself and find her own authenticity, but so too does America. The rowdy All Choked Up, the show’s climax, is clearly inspired by Jerry Lee Lewis’ Great Balls of Fire and perhaps also by Little Willie John’s Fever (later recorded by Peggy Lee in 1958), not only papers paying tribute to the music but also to the content of Great Balls of Fire, with the idea of what, is the of poetry?, love causing sickness. Nursery Papers. Here Grease shows us the bio psycho social model turmoil ahead in the 1960s, as sexual roles are reversed. Now that Sandy is a sexual being, she can finally sing real rock and papers roll. Now Sandy is the The Foundation of Understanding Human Anatomy Renaissance Period aggressor, a lesson she learned from rock and roll, a social trend that would soon push boundaries further and further, from Tina Turner’s A Fool in Love well into the 1970s. Papers. This is the beginning of feminism. Now American women could be sexual too. Bio Psycho Model. Many of those who still object to the show’s ending miss the nursery point of the show and may be unconsciously still caught up in gender stereotypes from the 50s that remain pervasive today. If a boy is mrs danvers sexually aggressive (as in Greased Lightning) he’s just a Guy. If a girl is papers sexually aggressive, she’s a Slut.
Have we really come all that far since 1959? But notice the lyric that Sandy sings: Oh baby, take it slow and don’t complain… She’s still not ready to sleep with Danny. And later in model, the song: Danny: Oh baby, take my ring ‘cause you’re my match. Sandy: Well, I still think there’s strings attached… Danny: You’re writin’ my epitaph! Sandy: Well, that’s just tough and half. Danny: You’re gonna make me die! Sandy: Don’t make me laugh!
Sandy may have changed the way she looks, and she may now have a more progressive philosophy of sexuality, but no matter how dramatically Danny pleads, she’s still not going all the nursery papers way just yet; that part of her has not changed fundamentally. She has not become a slut. But perhaps even more significant than Sandy’s new sexualized rock and roll persona in All Choked Up is her line after the song: Danny asks her if she’s still mad at him and she answers, Nah, fuck it. That this is the first time we’ve heard Sandy talk like that is certainly important, but even more so is compare and contrast what her answer means . The phrase is papers not just obscene; it’s also a universally recognized idiom with two related meanings. First, it says to the world that the speaker just doesn’t care anymore. Sandy’s not just cussing here; she’s publicly rejecting all the compare and contrast values of her past life, in particular the idea that sex is dirty.
She’s moving from the 50s to the 60s. The other parallel meaning is that regardless of the consequences, the speaker is papers charging ahead, and that’s part of this moment as well.

What The Top Consulting Firms Look For in Resumes #038; CVs. Even if you have already secured your interviews, you should still read this article, because it explains why you were selected, what biases the firms have, and what areas of concerns the firms may have that they will likely test you on during the in-person interview. In other words, what follows is an explanation of how the consulting firms think about recruiting new consultants. Once you understand this psychology, it makes everything the firms do very predictable . Keep in mind, these resume tips apply only to strategy consulting firms (as opposed to papers, IT or HR consulting firms) such as McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Bain, AT Kearney, LEK, etc. In addition, my comments are largely true regardless of which level position you are applying to (analyst, associate, APD, experienced hire, etc..) To start, let me dispel one myth: Resume Format. Many people obsess over long effects, how the papers resume is formatted. The truth is the Essay about words on the resume matter more than font size, columns, or margins. Simple example, if I see a resume that has the wrong margins but the resume says, Harvard University, #1 in papers Class, Physics (okay, I'm not even sure if Harvard ranks or has a physics degree). I will notice the resume. So the first big takeaway is long term effects of residential schools this: WHAT you say matters more than how you FORMAT what you say.
In screening resumes, I have seen dozens if not hundreds of formats. Many different formats can work. The most important thing is the major accomplishments are easy to read. Here is what the big firms are looking for: 1) Big Brand Name Employers or Schools. 2) Academic Performance (GPA) 3) High Standardized Test Scores in Math. 4) Evidence of Leadership and People Skills. 5) High Achievement Career Experiences (Proportional to Length of papers, Career) Keep in mind, these are resume criteria for ALL levels of about, consulting, not just post-college roles. Let me explain WHY each one is papers important.
1) Big Brand Name Employers or Schools. To be blunt, the bio psycho top consulting firms are school snobs. They like big brand name educational institutions for the simple fact that it impresses clients. If you're an Associate making $150,000 - $200,000 USD per year, your employer is probably billing you out to clients at $600,000 USD/year. That's $50,000 USD/month. The client is going to want to know what and papers who they are getting for that kind of money. When the answer is John or Jane Doe, who has a BS from Dartmouth, a MD from Yale and MBA from Harvard, clients respond with an bio psycho model Oh wow. Nursery. that's impressive comment.
It makes it easier to get new clients to according purpose, say yes. Now plenty of people get into the top firms (McKinsey included) that do not have such a perfect ivy pedigree. but if you got it, make sure it is OBVIOUS (it will help a lot). Let me explain the thought process of some of nursery papers, these biases. The thinking is that only super high achievers get into the top schools. and long effects of residential the top firms really like hiring super high achievers. This is not to say that the nursery papers firms do not hire from non-target schools (they do), but they assume the compare highest achievers from non-target schools will work really hard to contact the nursery firm (generally via networking) -- thus demonstrating their determination. (There is a lesson here. About Let Us Gay Marriage. If you do not have a super pedigree, you'd better be super determined, as evidenced by the amount of papers, effort you put into networking.) In addition, it is very expensive for the firms to do on campus recruiting. Of Understanding Anatomy Essay. So they stick to nursery, schools where the model offer rate vs. applicant ratio is high (high being defined as greater than 1%).
For example, Stanford (undergrad) is a target school and my year, 400 students applied for full time jobs, 6 offers were extended. and this was considered a very successful recruiting ratio by papers McKinsey). As a point of mrs danvers, reference, when I was recruited by McKinsey, I heard a rumor that the firm spent $100,000 USD in recruiting expense to hire ONE Business Analyst. This figure included all billable hours of interviewers and consultants who go to on campus recruiting events as well as hard costs for travel, renting conference rooms, hotels, etc. The recruiters or resume screeners also look for recognizable employer names. It is easier to understand a candidate's accomplishment via the implied credibility of the employer name and it is also easier to convey to clients. It is the nursery same reason everyone wants to work for MBB - McKinsey, Bain or Boston Consulting Group -- it implies something on Essay about Let Us your resume that stays with you forever. To this day, I am known as a Stanford Grad and an Ex-McKinsey Guy. It is papers how I am introduced formally or informally when I give speeches. It stays with you for a very long time. Let me give you a personal example that helps illustrate the importance of the big brand name on your resume.
When I applied for consulting internships in compare and contrast my junior year at nursery papers Stanford, I got rejected across the board -- not a single interview. The following year, I got interviews with every major consulting firm that I applied to of Understanding During Period, -- with no exceptions. I got interviews at McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Booz, LEK, AT Kearney, Monitor (since acquired by nursery papers Deloitte), Oliver Wyman (formerly Mercer), and a few others. (I also got offers from every consulting firm I interviewed with except BCG where I got rejected in round 1, and Booz when I decided to model, cancel my final round.) So what did I do in nursery papers the 12 months that made such a big difference? Well I looked at who got interviews (most were friends of mine) and tried to figure out why they got interviews.
Their GPAs were identical to mine. Compare And Contrast. Their areas of academic study were identical to mine. The only thing I noticed was many of nursery papers, them had worked for well known companies the what, is the purpose prior summer, and I had not. I decided to focus on improving the nursery papers brand name factor on my resume in two ways. First, I did an long effects schools internship at Merrill Lynch during the school year. Papers. I worked in the evenings doing telemarketing cold calls to wealthy families in Silicon Valley selling tax free investment income opportunities (LOL. I still remember my phone script, I said it so many times). By the way, this was an compare unpaid internship. so I worked for about 4 months every other night making cold calls for Merrill. Papers. just so I could put Merrill Lynch on my resume.
This decision was very deliberate as almost nobody else my year did an internship during the about Legalize Gay Marriage academic year. Second, I was able to nursery papers, get an internship with a big company (now called ATT) for that summer. So when I applied again my senior year, I now had two big brand name employers on my resume, whereas just 12 months earlier I had none. As I mentioned earlier, the following year, I got interviews with every consulting firm I applied to, in model large part because of the brand name employers on my resume (I was competing against 400 other Stanford students -- we all had the famous school on the resume so that was not a differentiator). Similarly as a resume screener, many of us would read resumes with a big red marker. All we would do for nursery papers hours was skim resumes while circling certain brand names on the resume that jumped out as recognizable or impressive. 2) Academic Performance (GPA) The top firms want to know if you are smart. According To Milton,. It helps to put your GPA on your resume.
If you do not, they will either 1) ask you for it anyways and papers write it by hand on your resume after you submit it, or 2) assume it is low and The Foundation of Understanding assess your resume accordingly. If your school's grading system is not well understood by others, you should explain the grading scale your school uses. Most US schools use a 4.0 GPA system - perfect marks is a 4.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0. If yours is different or you are applying from one country to an office in a different country, then you want to put on your resume some way for the reader to interpret your GPA (put your rank or put your %. like top 1% of class, something along those lines). For applicants coming out of nursery, college, many firms will ask for your transcript to see your specific grades on long term specific classes. In particular, they are looking for papers your grades in quantitative classes.
Oftentimes your resume will be read by a recent graduate from your school. Mrs Danvers. So if you went to nursery papers, Stanford and took Geology 101, the hinduism compare reader is going to know that you took Rocks for Jocks (the nickname for papers that class amongst Stanford students) and interpret your grades accordingly. Again there is not a cutoff and Essay Gay Marriage the standard will vary by school. Amongst the top undergraduate institutions, a 3.5 GPA or higher is good enough to not get disqualified from the papers process purely because of GPA. The resume reader will most likely read the rest of your resume before deciding. My GPA at Stanford was 3.5 at long effects of residential the time I applied to nursery papers, the major firms. so nowhere near perfect, but in hindsight it was good enough when combined with other factors to get many interviews. 3) High Standardized Test Scores in Math. Many firms will want to see a standardized test score of some sort - SAT, GRE, GMAT, MCAT, LSAT. Because it is sometimes hard to compare GPAs from one university to another, the standardized test score is an easy way to compare measure of one's math ability. Strong math skills do correlate strongly with the ability to think in a logical and analytical way -- the preferred thinking style that consulting firms favor enormously.
Since I applied coming out of social, college, I had only taken the SAT (the US standardized test high school students take to nursery papers, apply to US colleges) and bio psycho model I had a score of 800 on papers the math section (800 out of 800). It is vs buddhism and contrast not necessary to have a perfect score, but certainly the higher the better. There is no absolute cut-off as it depends on papers the impressiveness of the rest of your application. That being said, outperforming 95% of other test takers is of Understanding Human Renaissance ideal if applying to the top 3 firms. The standard is not as high with other firms. 4) Evidence of Leadership People Skills. Being smart (factors #2 and #3 above) is nursery papers not enough to do well as a consultant. You also need to long effects of residential schools, be able to work with clients who sometimes do not like you or resent you. So one of the things most firms look for is some evidence of people skills or leadership skills.
The firms want to nursery, know you can handle a difficult interpersonal situation -- especially any one involving high stress, deadlines, inter-personal conflicts. You will get asked about these kinds of leadership scenarios in your interview. They also look for it in your resume and effects of residential schools consulting cover letters too. If you have these experiences, PUT IT IN THE RESUME. It is a big mistake if you do not. These experiences can include: * Specific experiences at a particular job (especially people-skill type accomplishments that might not normally be valued by other employers in that industry, but would be valued by consulting firms.) The more technical your background, the nursery papers more important it is to emphasize these leadership and people skills.
If you have a PhD in Physics from MIT and bio psycho social model have been published 10 times, this is no guarantee of an papers interview. Here's why. With a PhD in Physics from MIT, it is The Foundation of Understanding Period assumed you have the analytical skills to do the quantitative aspect of the consulting job. But now the firms want to nursery papers, know if you can work with people. or if you are a brilliant but arrogant ass. In your resume or CV, you want to deliberately emphasize team work opportunities, leadership experiences, public speaking experiences, conflict resolution, people management, and team management type experiences. Now if you had a PhD in Physics but also did sales jobs to pay your bills during school and you were the top producing sales person, that would be intriguing. and clearly someone worth interviewing. In other words, you need to be the OPPOSITE of the mrs danvers stereotype for your area of academic study. If you are an English major, the nursery papers assumption will be you are good with people but lousy with numbers. On your resume, you need to mrs danvers, prove the opposite to be true. 5) High Achievement Career Experiences (Proportional to Length of Career) For applicants of nursery papers, all types (undergrad, post-MBA, experienced hires), the firms are looking for an impressive (career trajectory vs. length of career) ratio.
So if you've worked 1 year in hinduism vs buddhism compare your career, they want to papers, see 1 impressive year. If you've worked 10 years, they want to see 10 impressive years. Things to mrs danvers, emphasize in describing job experiences: * Emphasize OUTCOMES, not just responsibilities. * When possible, quantify your accomplishments with numbers. * Don't write everything you did on the job, focus on what is most relevant to consulting firms. For example, if you have a very technical degree, really good math test scores, 4 years of work experience in a very technical field in a very technical role, it is nursery a waste of space to spend too much time emphasizing your technical accomplishments. Use those bullets to emphasize business results (derived from your technical work), the financial impact, quantify the measurable change in behavior from what, according to milton, is the of poetry? your work (because of this new system I developed, 8,000 people now get their performance metrics through this system vs. Nursery. 0 when I started, that sort of thing).
If you have a liberal arts background, a liberal arts major, lots of extra-curricular activities where you showed you were a people person. in your job descriptions, emphasize how you built a statistical regression analysis and model to forecast prices of Gold in bio psycho the commodities market. Or became a self-taught software developer in a particular job. So the papers key message here is this: Pick your job description bullet points strategically . You don't have space to what, according to milton,, put everything you did, so you must focus on papers emphasizing those things you want to convey about each job to round out about Gay Marriage, your profile. Another way to balance out which points you choose to emphasize in the bullet points under each job description -- look for nursery the unusual combo. I remember one classmate of mine who interned at Bain.
She was an English major, but took several advanced math classes -- well over my head as a Quantitative Economics Major -- and got perfect grades in each of vs buddhism, them. Nursery. That's an hinduism vs buddhism compare and contrast unusual combo. Another way to think about it is something one of my McKinsey colleagues said to me. We like to hire engineers with people skills. Papers. And we like to hire poets who can do math. If you have an unusual combination of skills, be sure that comes through in your resume. Bust the hinduism stereotype that you might get type cast in. Thoughts on Resume Formatting.
Many different formats work, but a few general common sense rules of nursery, thumb apply: * Put your education experiences at the top. Make sure the name of the school you went to long term effects of residential, is easy to read. Whether you've never worked full time or have been in industry 10 years, put the schooling at papers the top -- it's what resume readers look for first, so don't bury it. (If it is buried, it is assumed that the school name must not be impressive.) No matter how long you have been out of school, put a standardized test score in the education section of what, according of poetry?, your resume.
If it is nursery papers missing, the assumption is it must be low (otherwise you would know to put it). * List your career experiences in chronological order (most recent job at the top, following education) -- make sure employer names are easy to read. * Keep the hinduism resume concise -- 1 page for anyone with little work experience, 2 pages max for experienced hires. * Use bullets to save space. Keep the points short and to the point. A good rule of thumb is papers 2 - 4 bullets per job experience, ideally most bullets being 1 line long. * Make sure the font size is easy to read. Since a size 11 font will vary depending on Let Us Legalize Gay Marriage which font is used, just make sure the reader can read it. * Make sure to bold all school names and employer names. No need to bold your job titles.
Recruiters look at employer name first, job title second. Emphasize the things that will catch a recruiter's eye first, draw them into papers reading the mrs danvers resume, and then discovering everything else you have to offer. If you worked for nursery papers a no name employer, but all your clients were famous. What, According To Milton, Purpose Of Poetry?. list the client names (possibly bold them too. might be a little over the top, but at least it will get seen). So if you worked for John Doe Consultants. but the client you worked with most was Bill Gates or the founders of Google, say that! This is not resume writing, it is marketing! * Do NOT include everything you ever did in your life.
The point of a resume is NOT to write a personal biography. The point is to SELL YOU. The key to nursery papers, sales in any format (resume, cold call, powerpoint, sales meeting) is to just show what the mrs danvers customer, or in this case employer, cares about. * Use language and nursery papers descriptions that the resume reader will understand. If you did your school work in long effects of residential Spain, but are applying for a job in Paris, do not assume the recruiter in Paris will know what a 9.5 GPA is. explain it is a 9.5 (out of 10.0) GPA.
If you won an equivalent of a Nobel Prize in your field, say won XYZ Award - awarded to papers, 1 person out of 10,000 applicants. These are phrases that any resume reader can understand. YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THE AUDIENCE before you write your resume. Do NOT assume they have the according to milton, is the purpose sufficient background to appreciate your accomplishments, you need to explain them on your resume. Good luck on your recruiting process. Also keep in mind that my website has over 500 articles, all on the topic of case interviews. The breakdown and examples were especially useful. I follow your site fervently and find your insights and advice really authentic. I have a few questions if you would be able to give me some advice. I would absolutely love to work at Mckinsey (NYC office, because that is nursery papers where I am from). The Foundation Of Understanding During Renaissance Period. I dont plan on nursery applying anytime soon but am trying to Human During Essay, steer my career strategy towards an eventual move into Consulting. I am currently working for a fortune 100 engineering company (Deere Co.) as a Product Engineer and nursery papers am planning to get a Mba from one of the top 5 schools. My concern is hinduism vs buddhism if I do make it to the one of the schools and then apply for a spot at Mckinsey, would my company and Mba school be enough brand naming for me to be considered?
In regards to GPA, my undergraduate GPA was quite low although I still managed to acquire a job at Deere which is consistantly considered a top engineering company. Papers. Also I went to a top 10 Engineering school (Purdue University), but not top 3 like MIT. Would these things be detrimental to my future application? I will have about 3 years of work experience by to milton, of poetry? the time I am ready to start my Mba. I was hoping that if I can secure a high GPA at the top Mba school, then I could use that for my GPA on the resume. Lastly I feel that I have great social skills in addition to my analytical prowess due to me being an Engineer. Although I am quite technical I have a varying array of interests, ranging from quantum physics/mathematics to economics to immigrant identity in the western cultures to cultural/social processes of thought in eastern cultures compared to papers, western and the art of Comedy. Would any of this be relevant to making me stand out as unique? Im sorry for the obnoxiously long comment lol, but I am hungry for some direction in my endeavor to get back home with the great prestige and opportunity of working for Mckinsey and am trying to bio psycho, get the best strategy to do so.
Thanks for all the help so far. Short answer: When you have a Harvard MBA, a lot is forgiven or forgotten. If you have a top 5 mba and papers do well, have a strong GMAT score, a less competitive pre-mba can be compensated for. Yes, it is noticed — but if the overall trajectory of your resume is hinduism vs buddhism and contrast strongly upwards, it can be a compensating factor. It might not be enough to papers, get into Period Essay the top 3 firms, but certainly the rest of the papers top 10 is a definite possibility. The GMAT score will be crucial for you. The interpretation you want the reader to have is 1) smart enough to have gone to harvard for undergrad, but for whatever reason the opportunity didn’t exist for this person at that time. In terms of the hinduism vs buddhism and contrast low undegrad gpa at a non target school, the interpretation you hope for is the nursery person was smart, but lazy as an undergrad… and for a variety of reasons, got serious and the more recent accomplishments and test scores reflect being smart with the work ethic. You don’t want the undergrad gpa to be interpreted as that was the best the person could have done. The person worked as hard as possible and social the maximum performance the person’s intellect was capable of was the low gpa. Now if that happens to be true, it will most likely be reflected in nursery papers a gmat score in a range similar to the undergrad gpa.
But if the GMAT score is substantially higher than the undergrad GPA and the mba GPA is excellent, the interpretation (which they will never public admit) is the person was smart but lazy in college. (Or smart but suffered from long term illness while in college, or had some family tragedy, or some other non-intellect factor) Action Items: GMAT 720+, get into top 5 mba, graduate at top 20% of your class. This is nursery papers great! But do I have no real chance at the top three firms, even if I accomplish the Essay about Let Us Legalize Gay Marriage said action items? I have become very keen on being able to work at Mckinsey and from many of the stories I have read on papers your site it seems that people who have not gone to target schools as undergrad were still able to what, according to milton, purpose, work at the top 3 firms. I was under the impression that if I worked hard enough with all the material and papers advice you provide and also network well at one of the top 5 Mba programs, that I would have a fighting chance.
I mean I know that nothing is definite, but your opinion as a former Mck interviewer is The Foundation of Understanding Human Anatomy Renaissance Period obviously very potent and relevant. If my future application with all the things I am trying to accomplish is still by your standards not up to nursery, par, I have to long of residential schools, respect that. I know you always say that anything could happen and to find my own way is key but knowing your experience as a resume screener and papers interviewer, I can’t help but re-evaluate. Of Understanding Human Renaissance Period. Still, I do intend on trying and striving towards a spot at the top and if it doesn’t happen then I will still have all my accomplishments to fall back on. Anything you can give me so to bolster my future candidacy would be of immense worth and nursery papers focus, this is the path I have set out and my determination to go to Mck is absolute. Thanks Victor for according to milton, is the purpose the direction, I will fervently strive to nursery, one day be on your success stories section. Hi Victor! As an undergraduate student applying for consulting internships for next summer, I found this article incredibly helpful. I have one question about the The Foundation of Understanding Anatomy Period standardized test scores – I have 5’s on papers both Calculus AP tests and is the both the papers language and Anatomy During literature AP tests.
These scores are better than my SAT scores in math and critical reasoning – would it be acceptable to use my AP scores on my resume for the standardized test section? Hey Victor, I have been reading your articles all summer and they are super insightful! Question: Would any of the papers firms hire someone with a B.A. majoring in Biology and English who is medical school bound? I am going to medical school September 2015, and have a gap year. I ultimately want to work in a place like McKinsey after pursuing an MD and according to milton, getting some clinical experience. Nursery Papers. How should I proceed? Do you have any advice on moving from IT/HR consulting to Strategy consulting? Outside of Anatomy Renaissance Period, going back to get an MBA or other advanced degree, I’ve heard the nursery paths are extremely limited.
I have an undergrad degree in aeronautical engineering from an overseas university with a 7.00/10.00 GPA, and I’m currently working on my Master’s in Aerospace Engineering at bio psycho model Penn State University. Nursery Papers. My GPA will only be around 3 when I’m done, however I have 710/800 in Quants and 700/800 in Verbal from my SAT in senior year of high school. I also have 800/800 in long term schools Quants and 740/800 in Verbal on the GRE when I applied to grad school. I have realized only after coming to nursery, grad school that engineering isn’t what I really want. I have pretty good critical thinking and mrs danvers analytical skills. And I have been told my communication skills are very good too. I have been thinking hard about consulting over the past several months and I think consulting would be a great fit for me.
What do you think are my chances of nursery, getting a top 10 company to give me an interview shot with the above criteria? What else besides the GRE and SAT scores would I need to offset that bad GPA? I’m looking to attack all other areas of my profile as much as possible so I would really appreciate your feedback on this. The Foundation Anatomy During. Thanks! Thank you for this great site too! Helpful and insightful article. You have answered all my questions.
I have fired blanks all the time with Consulting companies though I considered myself well suited – Executive management experience more than 15 years management and project management experiences, two masters degree – one cum laude from private college in nursery papers my home country. Re-reading your article suggest, i have no chance in hell in mrs danvers landing that consulting career with a big consulting house. What a pity. Should post-college graduates abridge resume to 1 page? In terms of resume length, the papers rough rule of thumb is one page per term of residential, decade of papers, post college work experience. I am working as a procurement research analyst in a start up company in India. The company I work for is 8 years old but all our clients are billion dollar global companies including the fortune 500 companies. I have 3 years work experience after an MBA from a state level top b-school.
I am aiming at term effects the big 4. Do I have a chance? Resume might not be as impressive as Harvard but I will give my best in the interview. My question is am I even in the race? It’s hard to papers, tell. The easiest test is to look at other graduates for your business school to see if any are working at the too 4 consulting firms. Just wanted to give you some Kudos for that helpful article.
Greetings from Germany, I am a mech engineer with a Masters from a top 15 school in the US and a bachelors from a top 10 (non-IIT) school in India. I moved into IT through a scholarship by NIH and have been with a not-for-profit managing their entire IT department (13 million) since. I’ve been admitted in SBS (Oxford) for a MBA. What are my chances of Essay about Gay Marriage, working with one of the top three consulting firms? Does a not for profit background and nursery papers non-branded background rule me out as a candidate?
Hey Victor, I’m an undergrad at berkeleys business school but the problem is I transferred from according to milton, purpose community college. Berkeleys undergrad biz school is super hard to get into, about 6% Acceptancce rate. If I do well at berkeley will any of the top consulting firms even give me a chance? Please feel free to nursery, be honest. Thanks. By itself, I don’t think it is Human During Renaissance Essay a deal killer. But, you will have to do well at Cal and nursery realistically better than you normally would if you went their directly from high school. My college roommate at Stanford was a community college transfer. He was a Stanford Computer Science major with a 4.0 GPA — needless to Let Us Legalize, say nobody cared how he got into Stanford, only how he performed as he left.
Incidentally, the “story” you want to nursery papers, imply (assuming it is true) is that you went to model, community college to save money (which most consider an acceptable reason to go) but were qualified to attend an elite university (and your high gpa at the elite university is papers indicative of your ability to perform at a high level). The “I couldn’t afford it” is long of residential schools a much more acceptable “excuse” than “I wasn’t ‘smart’ enough to get in”. It would help to have a super high SAT, GMAT or GRE score too. Thank so much for the reply victor. For haas business there is a curved GPA, do you think they will take that into consideration if I don’t have a 4.0? I think I should have a 3.75-3.8 is that ok? That’s pretty good if it’s a STEM (science, technology, engineering or math) type major. Resumes get reviewed on papers the whole picture. You don’t need everything to be perfect, but if one thing is low something else on the resume needs to hinduism vs buddhism compare and contrast, stand out as a compensating factor. So a low GPA with a perfect GRE score might still get considered if a good explanation for the low GPA came along with it.
A less prestigious school with a #1 rank amongst all students would often still get considered. My consulting resume toolkit includes a dozen or so resume grading calculators. Nursery. You can find the link somewhere on vs buddhism the website, probably at nursery papers the top. If everything across the board is poor, that’s a deal breaker. If one thing is long effects of residential poor, but the rest exceptional that’s a possibility. Nursery Papers. If everything is above average, that’s a possibility, etc… Numerous ways to get considered. Also have you ever heard of people getting a job at a top consulting firm (MBB) with a lower GPA? 3.5 or higher is the of Understanding norm, under that would require exceptional circumstances. I am a mech engineer with a Masters from a top 15 school in nursery papers the US and a bachelors from a top 10 (non-IIT) school in India. I moved into hinduism and contrast IT through a scholarship by NIH and have been with a not-for-profit managing their entire IT department (13 million) since. I’ve been admitted in nursery papers SBS (Oxford) for Essay about Let Us Gay Marriage a MBA.
What are my chances of working with one of the papers top three consulting firms? Does a not for profit background and non-branded background rule me out as a candidate? The non profit background does not rule you out. The lack of brand is an issue, but can be compensated for. Oxford is a target school so that is according is the going to papers, be of enormous help for you.
The lack of brand employers can be compensated in few different ways. If your prior work achievements were exceptional, that will help. Your performance at Oxford will be heavily scrutinized. I don’t know if they track and publish school rank, but if you were in the top 10% I think you would get interview opportunities. The final compensatory factor would be to network, meet people in the firms you want to target, and get them to recommend to their recruiting departments to interview you. The above maximizes your chances of getting the bio psycho social interview. Then you have to perform exceptionally well on the case. It can not just be an marginally acceptable performance (which someone with a stronger background might be able to get away with in the first round), in your case it really needs to be exceptional starting in round 1 to nursery, offset the perceived risk of long term schools, hiring someone without a brand employer background. From an nursery interviewers point of view, it is extremely, extremely difficult to turn down a candidate in round 1 who did exceptionally well. Mrs Danvers. It is VERY hard to do that.
If there is a resume issue, the papers thinking most interviews will do is social they will struggle with the decision, and then decide to pass the nursery decision to the round 2 interviewers. I should point out I have received many emails from about Let Us Legalize Gay Marriage people with backgrounds with a perceived negative item or two (some much “worse” than yours). They have gotten into the top firms. Nursery. BUT, and according is the purpose of poetry? I can’t stress this enough, they were EXTREMELY motivated and probably put 100 – 200 (the highest I’ve ever seen is 300+ hours) hours into case prep and papers several hundred hours into networking. It can be done, but the about “worse” the resume (and I don’t consider your resume bad, the papers Oxford piece is bio psycho social model quite the accomplishment but the lack of brand employers is a valid issue in the eyes of consulting firms) the harder you just worker AND very importantly the papers EARLIER you must start. Hinduism Vs Buddhism And Contrast. If possible start 6 and preferably 12 months earlier than when you plan to interview. Nursery. That is one of the common traits among those who got offers from the top 3 with some kind of disadvantaged resume. Flat out, they wanted the offer badly and were willing to put in term effects of residential schools the effort. Thank you for your reply. I am probably 7 months away from nursery starting school and 14-15 months away from interviewing. What do you recommend I do to get started?
I am a slow learner but a hard worker so what should my first step be? Is there a course I can join or should I get started with your videos? Also, I’ve heard the term “networking” thrown around a LOT since I got admitted. Is there a good place to learn networking 101? What should I be doing now to get placed a year later?
Thanks so much. Your reply was very helpful. Do you think regardless of your grades a referral/recommendation from a top employee within the firm can still get you a job within the company? No. Essay. It might be possible to nursery, get a case interview opportunity based solely on the relationship, but absolutely impossible to get the job offer at the top few firms without doing well on social model the case. From the firm’s point of view, there is papers ENORMOUS risk in bio psycho model putting someone without certain skills in front of a client. Nursery Papers. The fear is that one mis-hire could ruin the reputation of the Human Anatomy Renaissance Essay entire firm by saying something really “stupid” (e.g., in the firms’ eyes that would be stating a conclusion that is logically and factually incorrect). When I was a McKinsey consultant, if I made a major error with a client, it will not be described as “Victor made a mistake”, it will be described by papers the client as “McKinsey screwed up”.
THAT is why the firms are so intensely focused on the case interview. That are totally paranoid about the scenario I just described. Hey Victor, thanks for letting me know. What books do you recommend for case interviews? Or any tools that would help with acing case interviews? Thanks. I’m a bit biased on this one. I recommend my own book Case Interview Secrets.
For more advanced training, my Look Over my Shoulder program is very effective. It contains recordings of 20+ hours of actual case interviews with candidates with my real time analysis and critique of the candidates performance. And Contrast. It also specifically compares the differences between poor, average, and exceptional case interview performance so you can see, hear and experience the differences between performance levels. Also if you do well in your interview (that is if you got an nursery papers interview through an employee) and your grades aren’t top notch, say maybe a. 3.4-3.5 can you still secure a job at one of the three (MBB)? Yes absolutely. I had a 3.5 GPA coming out of Stanford. Term Of Residential. I would really try to get or keep your GPA at 3.5 or higher.
It also depends on the selectivity of your school. So a person with a 3.5 GPA from an papers ivy would get looked at and could get in Essay about Gay Marriage if they did well on the case. Someone from papers a top 200 university would be expected to have a higher GPA to compensate for lack of mrs danvers, ivy. Nursery. The same is of Understanding Human Anatomy During Renaissance true if the major is not technical or math oriented. An English major is expected to have a higher GPA than an engineer because the bias in consulting is nursery that math oriented majors are harder than the liberal arts oriented one. Hi victor, I have an upcoming interview at Bain for a summer associate intern position but I’m struggling to find the appropriate review and prep materials. Essay About Legalize Gay Marriage. Do you think case in point would be a good place to nursery papers, start? Or is it a bit advanced for a summer intern interview? Do you recommend any additional materials other than your videos (which are awesome btw!!) but I’m just stressing and want to be as prepared as possible. Thanks!! There is very little difference between undergrad intern and MBA level case interviews.
The standard is high mainly because clients demand it regardless of whether a consultant is an intent, and undergrad, or a MBA. Mrs Danvers. Logic is logic. Math is nursery papers math. Accurate conclusions are accurate conclusions. In terms of resources, I would recommend the following listed in mrs danvers increasing order of cost.
My free videos and email newsletter. My Look Over My Shoulder Program – recordings and analysis of 20+ case interviews with actual candidates http://www.caseinterview.com/loms. Doing 1:1 practice with a case coach (a former Bain, BCG or McKinsey interviewer) http://www.CaseInterviewCoach.com. In addition I would recommend up to papers, 50 practice interviews with a practice partner. If you don’t have one locally you can search for one at http://www.caseinterviewpartner.com. I would recommend practicing with partners after LOMS and before using case coaching. Oh also sorry I forgot to mention I’m an about Let Us Legalize undergraduate not an nursery MBA student. Thanks! Thank you for the helpful advice. I have sent an online application to Deloitte for their NextGen Leaders program and their minimum GPA requirement is a 3.2 according to their website.
I am currently a community college student that will be transferring to a CSU in long of residential the fall. I’m anticipating a 3.4 overall GPA at the time of transfer. Is that worthy for a community college student that is papers prior military with no extra curricular work? Any advice or recommendations to The Foundation During Essay, help myself stand out? Thank you.
I am an undergraduate student at the University of nursery, Minnesota majoring in B.S Economics. I do have internship experiences in equity research, consulting and investment banking. My current GPA is 3.5. However, I do not think my school brand is well know comparing to those Top schools. Also, two of the internship experiences that I had is from China which I think it’s not a big brand for US employer. The other one that I am working ( Consulting Intern) is a small consulting firm in Minneapolis which it is not really well known big brand as well. 1.Is that mean I am in really disadvantage situation among those applicants 2. Do you have any recommendation for me to improve my chance of being accept into the firm ? Hi Victor, I have been working in science research / project management for several years, but am now looking to switch into MC. Do you have any advice on additional ways to enhance my resume and training prior to mrs danvers, applying? My education background includes a Masters (science) from Cambridge.
I have also previously started an entrepreneur business venture. If I’ve had a total of 6-7 experiences (including pre-undergrad full time work and papers college internships). Is it necessary to include everything in my resume? An interviewer (non-US, non-top 50) brought it up during an interview and Human Renaissance Period said I should, even if it means exceeding the recommended 1 page length. Also, say I am working for papers a startup that isn’t doing that great and so decide to take another job (while still working for the startup), do I need to what, is the, mention both as my current experience in my resume? What I am trying to understand is if a resume is papers indeed just a marketing document where you provide only the Anatomy During Period Essay most relavent information or if its mandatory to list every position you’ve ever held. Just for full disclosure, I always mention all my work experiences during the papers interview process itself (I am not really trying to hide anything). Thanks a ton. Really appreciate the help. I think most people are somewhat split on this decision.
I personally see the resume as a marketing document. Everything on there should be accurate, but I personally think it is fine to Essay Legalize Gay Marriage, exclude things that aren’t relevant. For example, I do some volunteer work at my kids school. I helped them remove weeds from the garden next to papers, the playground. One could argue it is a “job”. But it isn’t relevant to my reader. Depending on your experience level, it’s customary to include coursework you took in school – though not practical to mrs danvers, list every course.
That’s my personal take. Nursery Papers. Again, a number of what, according to milton, of poetry?, people will disagree with this point of view. You should make your own decision on this based on what you are comfortable with. First of all, I really appreciate everything you put on the website. All of nursery papers, it is very useful and term schools immensely informative. I d0 have one question that I am curious about.
My resume lists all of the nursery papers things you listed above: A high GPA while committing over 40 hours a week to coaching/volunteering with various organizations. A big brand name internship as a sophomore, where I did some pretty meaningful things (as meaningful as an intern can do). Plenty of leadership/team experience. I haven’t taken a GMAT/SAT ever (took ACT as a sophomore in HS), but feel confident about my ability to do well on them if I were needed to list them. However, I go to The Ohio State University, which is not exactly prestigious (although it is climbing up the rankings every year… Go Bucks!). What’s the likelihood that my resume hits the hinduism compare and contrast trash folder because of the name of the nursery papers school at the top?
Is there anything I can do to bio psycho, still get an interview opportunity despite my school not being top 10? Lots of networking, I presume? If I don’t get a job because I interview and perform worse than the people they hire, I can sleep easy at night. It’s going to nag at nursery papers me if I don’t even get a swing at the plate because of my school. Anything you’ve got would really be appreciated. Your assessment of the situation is fairly accurate. There is a huge bias against social, non target schools. Nursery Papers. Networking is the key and term effects of residential also targeting in your case offices based in papers Ohio.
You will have an easier time get a chance (though still a long shot) from someone in Essay an Ohio office than say New York or Boston. Other than, anticipate getting an informal case interview by phone or over coffee (unannounced) to determine if someone you meet wants to risk their reputation by nursery recommending you for hinduism vs buddhism compare a real interview. You have to nail the nursery papers case in the interview for the interview. You basically would have to blow them away with your case performance to provide the compare extra margin of comfort they would need to endorse you despite the nursery papers non target school on your resume. I did get an 800 in the math portion of the SAT’s and nursery papers my quantitative skills have always been very strong but I do not have much coursework at mrs danvers UCLA that further demonstrates that. While I am applying to jobs, I have been considering taking some math or analytical courses that will increase my marketability.
Do you have any thoughts or suggestions about my approach? All of this is very new to me but your website has been a huge help! Do you think its wise for me to pursue a career at management consultant at this age? I just did my MBA (Distance Learning) from Warwick., 2. I was interested to buy your consulting resume package. Do you think it will be beneficial for me, considering I am going to apply for bio psycho a ‘experienced position’?
And is LOMS aimed to help experienced candidates like me? Ok, thats 3 questions! Most of the questions asked focus on people with MBAs and PhDs but I was wondering how consulting companies looked at degrees like MDs/DOs? I am currently a medical student and was wondering what the process would look like for me/what would you look for a medical candidate who was curious about papers a career in bio psycho consulting. Firms, McKinsey especially, do hire MD types. They are great with health care clients. Process is similar as PhD recruiting process generally. Expectations and qualification criteria are similar.
I really appreciate your time with us. Your comments are invaluable. I was curious how excellent is papers required by BA of top 5. I feel a lot of students have even much better experiences than mine. I don’t really have a “check-able” big name on my resume. – Ivy/ GPA 3.7/ Master/ Not business or engineering major/ GRE V85%+ Q95% – three internships in major government agencies in NYC/ – did well in finance econ market analyses engineer classes. – thesis using four coding and analyses tools. – founder of bio psycho model, three non-profit organizations during and nursery after undergrad. – some athlete experience 10 years ago…
Do you consider it a weak one or any advice for according to milton, of poetry? me? Thanks Victor! Based on nursery your background, I think you’d be considered at a top 3 firm. Be sure your GRE Q score is of Understanding Human Anatomy During Renaissance prominent on papers your resume. Shows you can do math even if math isn’t necessarily associated with your major or masters area of study. They might question why you want to Human Anatomy During Essay, work in business given your government and non-profit experience. You’d want to nursery papers, be prepared to answer that question. I am part time MBA candidate @ Kelley school of business.
Got good career progression compare to about Let Us Gay Marriage, proportionate length of my career and nursery have strong alma matter like Michigan Tech, Cummins, Kelley school of Business and according purpose of poetry? currently working as Manager in Google. However, No GMAT – Would that be an issue for MBB application in nursery papers future? Do you have an SAT score? The math score would be important. There’s an enormously high correlation between those with a 95%tile math standardized test score and those who get promoted at McKinsey (and other top 3 firms) after 2 years. I’ve seen it myself, those with high math scores are able to follow the mrs danvers logic of the work. If you didn’t, and they really liked you, they’d have you take one of their own internal math tests.
But given the non ivy background, my guess is papers if the math score wasn’t there, they wouldn’t bother with the The Foundation Anatomy Renaissance Period extra effort to get a standardized math read on your abilities. I didn’t have SAT score but I scored 780/800 in GRE Quant section. Do you think GRE Quant score can help? Yes a GRE quant score would be perfectly acceptable as well. A 780 GRE quant is inline with other people at the top firms. Definitely include the score on your resume. I have read through all the comments, and nursery there is no-one in my situation… Flawless academic record (1st in my entire country!!), 800 Math SAT, Yale University, Computer Science major, went to work for hinduism vs buddhism compare and contrast a French consultancy… in 1999.
I spent some years working for the consultancy, then became technical director of a start-up, then took a few years off to raise a family (of academic superstars!). I also travelled the world running half-marathons in a dozen different countries, speak several languages, and am a Cordon Bleu certified pastry chef. But I know I am not exactly a top consulting firm profile. I wouldn’t even consider it, but a close family member is a successful McKinsey consultant and papers honestly believes the about Let Us Legalize Gay Marriage role is PERFECT for me. I have a reputation as a genius… but I’m afraid it’s outdated, and possibly wiped out completely by nursery the time off to raise the Let Us Gay Marriage family.
What do you think? Is there an nursery papers age limit? And what about a long gap in work experience (but surely raising a family is a valid reason?)? No age limit. Your background is vs buddhism compare interesting. You would need to nursery papers, explain why consulting fits into your career plans at this particular moment in The Foundation of Understanding During Renaissance Period time. If your GPA at Yale was high, I would definitely put that on your resume.
The story you want to convey is you were the papers kind of The Foundation Human Renaissance Essay, candidate McKinsey would have interviewed upon papers graduating from schools college, and now they’re getting another chance. You would want to papers, acknowledge your more recent background is a bit atypical, explain how it would benefit the firm and its clients, and also explain how if you got the job you would stay for some time. The concern would be you would be dabbler and not take consulting seriously. If your GPA were strong and you could provide reasonable answers to compare and contrast, the above questions, I would select your resume for interview. I currently studying Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley. Would you consider UC Berkeley for engineering (a top 3) an equivalent to the Ivy brand recognition you talk about, for someone studying engineering? I am applying to the Next Generation Women Leaders Program at McKinsey. I know this is not an nursery internship opportunity but I am only a Sophomore so I am trying to get one for next year. Is a 1960 score on the SAT too low – should I not list it on my resume?
I am wondering if they care for these types of programs (they do not ask on the application), I do not want to Essay Legalize Gay Marriage, put it on nursery if they think it would be too low and The Foundation of Understanding Anatomy During Renaissance Essay am unsure if they would ask. Since it’s not an actual job application, if they don’t request your score, it’s fine to leave it out. A 1960 score on the SAT would likely be considered low by McKinsey standards. When you apply, you will need to included your score. If you don’t, an administrative recruiter will to ask you for your scores before your resume is ever read by a decision maker. However, a good GPA in management/finance does not make you good with numbers or smart with numbers. I have taken many finance courses and it is nothing compared to what math people do. In management, everything you nee to know is in a book, or in past finals, past midterms. You memorize and apply, and papers you don’t need to understand the real logic behind all the elements in a formula. Thank you very much. The resources you’ve provided are invaluable.
I’ll be applying as a advanced degree holder to effects of residential schools, consulting firms (aiming for nursery papers top 10) this cycle and am considering re-taking some standardized tests. I have a BA Physics from UC Berkeley (3.60 GPA) and will be applying as Engineering PhD graduate from UCLA (3.62 GPA). What do you think my GRE and of Understanding Anatomy Period Essay SAT scores should be if I am to nursery, stand a chance for the top 10? Thanks again for everything. For top 3 firms, anything over of Understanding Anatomy During Essay, 95% percentile is clearly sufficient. Over 90% percentile is often acceptable if the rest of the package is strong. If there’s a math break out to nursery, the standardized test, they’re looking for 95%+. If you’re already over 90%, probably not worth re-taking the vs buddhism compare and contrast test. A better use of your time would be to network and nursery papers make contacts within your target firms. Better ROI on your time.
For rest of top 10 firms, you can probably drop those “cut-offs” (they aren’t hard and fast cut offs), by 5% – 15% depending on bio psycho model the firm and where there in the top 10. Thanks for this article – it’s been really useful for me. I realised after reading it my CV was lacking experience with a “big name” employer, so I pursued these opportunities. I’ve been offered an internship at Taylor Wimpey (UK’s biggest house builder, FTSE100), but it’s in health and safety (the job description makes it sound pretty unimpressive) I’m unsure whether it will improve my CV for strategy consulting purposes. The alternative would be to stay on at the nursery papers CSR consultancy I currently work for: we have some well-known FTSE100 clients, but there’s not much room for promotion/new responsibilities in the company. Any advice you have would be appreciated. By the way, I’m based in the UK and what, to milton, purpose planning to apply for papers graduate roles there in September.
Neither situation seems ideally suited on the basis of being a stepping stone to long term effects of residential, strategy consulting. You might consider making the decision based on other factors or if time permits look for nursery a third option. Thank you very much for your advice. Is The. I appreciate you taking the time to nursery papers, answer. That sounds like a good plan. I would like to know your feedback on mrs danvers my special case. I am an American citizen that lived in Lebanon for almost my entire life, and I studied Mechanical Engineering at the American University of nursery papers, Beirut. I would like to know what firms do you think would consider me for an interview, the following is a brief profile description.
Cumulative GPA: 3.15. GPA during the last 2 semesters: 3.67. Experiences: Research assistant at the University of Houston, and an intern for a local boutique consultancy firm. Extracurricular activities: President of the Engineering Student Society, varsity player in 2 sports, student representative.. I have a question about my poor SAT scores. I did poorly on my SAT with total composite of 1800+ and math 710(which is on the boarder line). This year, I successfully transferred to The Foundation Human Essay, an Ivy League school through an engineering program and I’m going to nursery papers, be a raising junior this academic with a relative good college GPA. Essay About Gay Marriage. I’m very interested in going into Consulting/IB(Capital Markets), especially MBB and the bulge bracket. Papers. I recognized that my low SAT score may hinder my path in the future, do you recommend me taking it again soon? This is The Foundation of Understanding Human Anatomy During Renaissance Period Essay a tough one.
Your math SAT is good enough for papers a resume reader to read the rest of your resume. The other part of the model SAT is low. My hesitation is it takes a lot of time to nursery, make meaningful improvements in model your scores. If you think you might be going to graduate school or b-school, you might consider taking the GRE or GMAT instead. I’d like at the relative weights of those tests math vs all else and see if the structure of the nursery papers test fits better with your strengths. If your career plan involves taking the GMAT at some point in time, it’s an easier decision to according of poetry?, take it a little earlier than you otherwise would. It’s harder to papers, justify retaking a test you have no use for other than a single bullet point on your resume. I am an advanced degree candidate (Ph.D) and I am hoping to move into management consulting in one of social model, MBBs. My issue currently is nursery papers that I did not have to take a standardized test for my Ph.D. in engineering program in a top 15 graduate schools.
Is having standardized test results a requirement for my application? Do you suggest that I take either the long schools GMAT or GRE so that I can have a standardized test score on nursery papers my resume? or focus my energy on case studies? Thank you so much. Did you ever take the SAT or ACT? If so, use that. The Foundation Of Understanding Anatomy Essay. Otherwise, I would check the McKinsey website and potentially call the on campus recruiting coordinator and papers ask your question.
I don’t think it’s worth taking those tests if you can avoid it. Most likely if McKinsey has concerns, they would have you take the McKinsey Problem Solving Test to get a read on your quantitative skills. I’m unclear on how other firms would handle it. What, According To Milton, Is The Of Poetry?. Basically you need some way to objectively prove you can think logically (and math test performance is a good proxy for this school, but not the only one). Nursery Papers. If you’re PhD is in mathematics that would be one alternative.
If you’re a teach assistant in some kind of math or statistics class that would be another. If you’ve won any awards and social can show your percentile rank, that would be another.

How to nursery papers Guide to mrs danvers Racing Resume / Sponsorship Proposal. So you want to race. Welcome to the club. Whether you are trying to work this out with family support, or on your own, unless you are fabulously wealthy, you have already realized that sponsorship is a must for nursery nearly every racer on the track. In your pre-racing days you had to pay for parts to bio psycho make your ride go as fast as your buddy's, or to make it easier on your bod while having fun.
As a racer, whether you are a first year amateur or a factory pro, you will have to obtain the performance modifications and replace product when you mess it up, on or off the track. In fact I know of quite a few times that perfectly good brand new parts have been destroyed in the process of installing them (an expensive education and a lesson in why we should read the directions that come with our new toys). The point being that your little obsession/habit of racing/riding is going to be a costly adventure, but also the nursery papers, time of your life. Anyone that has been to a race track has noticed the stickers on Essay Let Us Legalize the bikes and haulers. These are sometimes put there because they came free in the shipment of nerfs, handlebars or in a sticker pack the rider got at papers the local Honda shop. If you are a sponsored rider, then the branding/stickers on your quad and hauler establish you as a part of the hinduism vs buddhism, company that you represent. Your actions while wearing the stickers of your sponsor reflect on papers the sponsor as well as yourself. Sponsors consider that when choosing riders. Next question, How do I get a bunch of those stickers without paying for them or the parts they come with?
Answer: You do your darndest to earn sponsorship. Simple. Essay Let Us! Right? Not really. Nursery! When I first got into this arena I was in the same shoes you are in right now (unless you have a marketing degree- in which case disregard the rest of this article). My background had nothing to do with how to write a resume for a racer. Long Of Residential Schools! Sure I could find examples from nursery, books at the library or bookstore on resumes, but none for a professional or semi-professional athlete, much less a racer.
So I had to determine what to do to mix the style of resume that I would submit if was looking for a position with a secretarial pool or a teaching position and that of a professional athlete forming a `Racer's Resume'. If you are still reading this right now, you are probably one of the sponsor hungry population who are running out of Let Us Gay Marriage, time to get noticed and be considered for this season's budget from nursery, most companies. How it works: Nearly every company has a `Sponsorship Budget' in their program. Each company has a person or team of compare and contrast, persons responsible for distributing the monies/products or a combination of both to deserving athletes. This person or team of persons is called `Rider Support'. Nearly every company that offers sponsorship has levels of sponsorship.
Common levels are A, B C level support, Pro and Factory. Support can range from nursery, a discount on certain products to long of residential schools free products, contingency (this would be money paid for your wins at certain events) all the way to the Holy Grail of the racer: Factory Support. Now let's get down to how to keep your resume on the top of the nursery, pile and out of the trash can. Aside from the basics like your name, street address, city, state, zip code, home and cell phone numbers, you should also include your email. A common mistake, believe it or not, is to leave out contact information. Jack Bednar, from Lonestar Racing, has had to dig through the trash pile before to find the about, right envelope that a resume came in to find out how to nursery papers get in touch with the rider. Also necessary in your resume is a short bio of you and mrs danvers, your riding history. Nursery! Don't go into of Understanding Anatomy During Renaissance Period Essay great detail of every second, third or less finishes you have had, and don't include reasons why you didn't podium at specific races.
Until you are sponsored, no one really cares why you didn't finish a race except your parents. Photos are a must. Nursery! You need to social include a head-shot of yourself, one of your bike and nursery papers, one action shot of you at the very least. References must be listed on mrs danvers your resume. Papers! Make sure to include contact information on your references as well. Submit your resume to the right people, during the bio psycho model, right time frame. What this means is make sure that you address your resume to the correct department within your target sponsor. Check on the target sponsor's website or call their operator to make sure you have the right address, right name and papers, right time frame to submit your resume. OK, these are the rules.
Sounds pretty easy so far. If this was all there is to it, you would not have read this far. This section is more the strategy than cheat codes. There aren't really `Cheat Codes' to a resume, but there are bonus points you can score. Let's review what we have done so far.
We have a basic 4 page resume. You have included all the `regular' stuff and are following all the rules. Now, let's get creative and find the way to keep your resume on the `keep' pile of your target sponsor's desk. First of all do not even consider handwriting your resume. Make sure you use a good word-processor and spell check it. Kevin Mummuah, from Lost Creek Cycle, says, Don't expect someone to do more for you, than the effort you put into your resume. I can tell how much work they put into it when I open them. The ones that haven't spent the time are obvious.
Your focus should be to bio psycho model maximize what you can offer your potential sponsor in the form of nursery papers, endorsing their product and how to communicate that you can do this to the sponsor. Mrs Danvers! If you are sending resumes out to companies that you really like, then it shouldn't be too hard to express your enthusiasm for the company and their product or to come up with ideas on nursery how you would carry the compare, message to potential customers on how awesome their products are. Is your brain full yet? Maybe this is where you should reconsider that job at the sawmill instead of racing. I know I have suggested something like this a couple of times to my racer. Beginning with your contact information review what you have there. Format your information with your name in papers bold print.
This is long effects of residential, important. Nursery! If you have included your email, and social model, I am hoping you ARE including an email, you need to papers keep it professional. You are asking companies to invest a serious amount of confidence in you as well as money in about you to support their products and represent their company. If you have an email of nursery, email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org (I don't know if these are real emails or not), it definitely gives a certain impression. Essay About Let Us Legalize Gay Marriage! Most companies have so much interest in their sponsorship programs that they can throw away any potential riders that even hint of papers, unprofessionalism. Go ahead and keep your identity nickname for long term effects chat and private messages, but obtain a professional email with your name in it like email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org either of these would be acceptable and have no unprofessional image. A note on professionalism: if you include your cell phone number or private home number make sure that your recording is also mainstream.
No radical music interludes, raps, or weird recordings. Keep it short and sweet. People in rider support don't have all day to listen to your favorite tunes or you goofing off on your answering machines. Make the choice to go with something grown-up, since you are asking for a grown-up gift. Most of the Rider Support people take about 30 seconds on each resume before deciding what pile to nursery papers file it in. Long Term Of Residential! You need to get their attention to make them even slightly interested in you in the first 10 seconds so they will put you in the `keep' pile rather than the `round' file next to the desk (trash can). Start your resume with an eye catcher. Papers! What catches your eye? An action photo would be a good idea. OK, here comes the kicker: you actually need a decent action photo to hinduism put there. If you don't have some that have been professionally done, get some.
Next make sure that the reader can tell it's you. Below are two examples. Nursery! They are both great `action' photos but the second one is defiantly more eye-catching. Also use good sizes but not to overwhelming and use good quality prints. After you have your resume completed don't mess it all up by printing on your home computer with a low color cartridge. You can have them printed in social color on a laser printer for nursery under a buck a page at the local Kinkos. Make sure that you are the focus and that action is clear. As Kevin Mummuah said, Don't send me substandard photos with ant people in Gay Marriage them. Next you need to describe what your abilities and qualifications are. Get rid of all the descriptions of nursery, how cool you are and what people think about you. Mrs Danvers! Do include action words describing what you can do.
Be willing to back it up. And keep it short. Make sure to include a short history of your wins. Don't include every race you did or why you didn't podium or finish a particular race. Papers! If you have a photo of your pit area at a race this would be a good place to include it. About! I am thinking of a photo of your pit area, neat, no garbage, clean well maintained quad, your tools organized and maybe you and your mechanic (or Dad, or your dog) standing next to your quad in full clean gear.
Remember you are asking a company to be identified with your professionalism. Do you really think they will be interested in being associated with someone who has no respect for their bike or surroundings? Include where you plan to race for the upcoming season. Nursery! Just list the series that you plan to do in mrs danvers full. If you are going to papers do something like the full GNC National schedule then include it, otherwise say you will be attending selected National events. Be realistic on where you are going to Anatomy During Essay race and choose one series to focus on. Spell check. Read it aloud to someone (that usually catches something that is worded weird).
Check your formatting. Nursery! Make sure you don't have lines that look. this in your resume. Do your homework. Mrs Danvers! Find out exactly who to send your resume to nursery by calling the company or looking up on their website for information on where and who to send your resume to AND make sure that you are submitting your resume in the right time frame. For instance Shift's Rider Support head, Rob Salcedo, says that they ONLY accept resumes during October 1-31 period. Clancy Schmitt, from Hiper-Technology, says they get over 500 per long, year. Nursery Papers! The competition is stiff for those sponsorships. So make sure yours comes to the attention of the right person during the right time period. Spell out how you plan on earning your sponsorship. Hinduism! Simply `promoting my sponsors to the best of my ability and nursery papers, listing my sponsors on my sign-ups' is mrs danvers, not enough. This is papers, EXPECTED not a perk from you. Running the sponsor's stickers and saying `Thank-You' when interviewed are also expected. Whew, now that we have that out of the way, think on what YOU can do that only you can do.
Be original. Be clear on what your plans are. Spell out exactly what you would like your sponsor to do for you. Do not expect free stuff. Social! More realistically you can expect to receive some kind of a discount on product if you are selected for sponsorship. Many companies offer their main products at a special rate for nursery sponsored riders. Fasst Company said they want to see at least six things that you can do for them.
Chris and mrs danvers, Cole say, Whatever you want from this company, you need to be prepared to do double in return. References are important. Just like a `regular' resume, be prepared to supply the names, addresses, and phone numbers of people that have knowledge of your riding and personality. Your school counselor could write a quick letter of support (on school letterhead) as well as be a reference, a family member, the owner of the local bike shop and other sponsors are great references. Other riders are not good references. If you can get someone who is nationally recognized to be a reference this is best. The ATV industry is quite small and nursery papers, many people know each other well enough to just give a quick call. If you are under 18 years old, it is absolutely imperative that you include the fact that you have family support. Even young adults will benefit from vs buddhism, showing a strong family support system.
Be prepared to show who you are, not just what you do. This is hard to accomplish in a 4 page resume but can be done. Presentation. Make sure that you have a cover page, your resume, history/bio page, and a photo page. This is all standard stuff that most of the Rider Support personnel that I spoke with wanted to see. They also have some pet peeves of papers, what is not cool to them. Rob Salcedo absolutely hates those slippery covers that you get for school reports. What happens is you get a stack of them together and they all start sliding out, ending up on the floor, in mrs danvers the coffee etc. Papers! So binders are a big no-no.
A simple staple or cover that is not slippery is hinduism and contrast, good. Nursery! Have I mentioned spell checking yet? Take pride in The Foundation Anatomy Essay yourself and your request. Let your potential sponsor see who you are. Biggest mistakes include: non typed or non word processed resume; slippery folders; the quote, `will promote your company to the best of my ability'; large files emailed to company; too short of a resume; too long of a resume; and misspelled words. Every company that I spoke with accepted resumes in mail form. Nursery! A few accepted emails, and fewer still accepted FAXed resumes. Nearly every company accepted resumes in The Foundation of Understanding Anatomy Renaissance Period October and November. A few accepted them in September and a few accepted them in December.
After January 1 no one that I spoke with would look at a resume. Each company that I spoke with had different levels of support. Scot Denton, from Denton Racing, said they have four levels of nursery, support. Kevin Mummuah from Lost Creek Racing works with a lot of to milton,, riders at different levels of support. Lost Creek has their pros but also a large number of amateurs and pros who are not even on the roster for Lost Creek, who sometimes end up getting on track support from Kevin. Papers! Hiper Technology has three levels of term of residential schools, support.
Basically most of the companies that I spoke with have different levels of increasing support the longer you have been with the papers, company or as your racing wins or popularity as an ATV personality increases. If you refer a customer to your sponsor, ask the customer to tell your sponsor where they found out about the mrs danvers, product. This looks very good for you and your sponsor will remember this when it comes time to re-evaluate their budget the papers, next year. Jack Bednar summed it up pretty well, Obviously we can't see them all ride, so we have to go on long term effects of residential how they present themselves to us through a resume. There are a lot of people using the nursery, Sponsorhouse system for generating a resume. This is a great resource, and OK to use, for a starting point. The format of the Sponsorhouse system takes care of all the term effects of residential, basics but the individuality is lacking and papers, many times it seems that the potential sponsor or overwhelmed Rider Support personnel are directed to mrs danvers a web-page to go over. Papers! Keeping in mind that the Rider Support people see so many resumes each year, do you really think they are going to about Legalize Gay Marriage be interested in sitting in front of a computer surfing your webpage? Sponsorhouse is a great addition to a traditional resume that is sent out as a hard-copy to your target companies and can really help as the year goes on papers by keeping your hard-won sponsors up to date on what is happening with you.
